well, got the call from doctor on tuesday....said to start imuran.

its thursday now and i am about to pop one in my mouth.

im a bit scared.
i dont want side effects.

but my psoriasis is out of freakin control. ever since i stopped prednisone and got better with my UC, my skin looks like i have a bad case of chicken pox. so bad. i hate it. it hurts, it itches, i pick the hell out of it. its everywhere.

finally well enuf to start having sex to make a baby, and now my skin is so bad i dont even want to get naked. if its not one thing its another.
my poor hubby just wants some nookie and now i have ANOTHER excuse not to do it. i want to do it. but im embarrased. he says im gorgeous and he cant see it. but omg. its so bad.

i just read that imuran is used to treat psoraisis. that is good news. but it will come back if i ever stop imuran.
it seems that pred makes psoraisis go away, but when i stop it comes back 100 x worse.

does ANYONE have ANY advice or stories or anything for me.... in regards to all this?

Steph, I have psoarasis along my hairline and if I didn't take care of it, it would creep down my FACE. Embarassing? Painful? Itchy? Oh heck yes!! But good news...........when I started 6mp, it went away and I have yet to see it come back! :) That is one of the good things I LOVE about 6mp. I am still on it, so I can't honestly tell you if it will come back worse or at all when you stop. But it makes sense that it would since Imuran or 6mp are immune suppressors and psoarasis is an auto immune condition.

about intimancy with your hubby, I know what it's like to feel AND look like crap but yet you still want to have sex. Body image is everything when it comes to this. And for the longest time, I wouldn't let my husband turn the lights on. It helped me with my self esteem issues and it made me feel more comfortable being with him - even though he too would tell me that I was beautiful. It's a mental thing. So why not try it in the dark?

oh we still do it, in the dark and light. i just hate it so much. i look like i have 3 sets of chicken pox everywhere. sucks. i have been taking imuran for 2 days now (lol) and no bad reactions yet. so im hoping it works out.
ive heard that you can get super sick on it and not be able to take it.
i hope im not one of those people...

so, ur's went away.. thats good to know. my psoriasis will seriously go away in like a day and half when i start prednisone. hope its that quick with imuran. bikini season will be here soon and i gotta look presentable on the beach! haha.
i better be able to go in the sun while on imuran. ive heard mixed things..

I've been taking Imuran since January and I'm fine. I survived the latter part of the cold/flu season here and the swine flue outbreak at school. Just wash your hands like normal and be careful about touching your eyes, nose, lips, etc.

You don't have to wear a surgical mask or live in a bubble. You should be okay. =]

Hang in there. I had severe cystic type acne once I started on prednisone (about 6 months ago!) that has yet to clear up, so I know what it feels like to feel unattractive on top of the UG. I promise your hubby doesn't care as long as he's getting nookie! However, it may lessen your amorous feelings. Just try to close your eyes and imagine yourself exactly like you want to look. Takes some mental jujitsu, but it can be done!

I've been on imuran for 3 months now with no noticeable side-effects, so hopefully that will be the same for you.

I'm trying to remember how long it took for my psoarasis to go away. I want to say it was about a month or two of being on 6mp but I honestly can't remember. All I remember is that one day it dawned on me that my forehead wasn't itching and I looked in the mirror and all those LOVELY plaque circles were gone! I was tickled :)

If the imuran doesn't work (which I really hope it does!), I know that some of the biologics are approved for psoriasis (at least in the US). Remi is approved for UC in Australia, right? I don't know if it's approved for psoriasis in the US or not, but there's a pretty good chance it would help, I imagine.

Try not to be scared about imuran! If something bad happens, deal with it as it comes, but try not to worry, because there's a great chance nothing bad will happen. I'm on it with zero side-effects. When I'm around sick people I take vitamin C. I get sick as much as regular people, and my skin is fine in the sun. Also, with imuran, you get to kill two birds with one stone =)

I had ringworm all over my face, back, arms, and neck once and I know it's temporary but crap it was uncomfortable lol, but I mostly forgot about it when sex came up. Your husband loves you or he wouldn't have married you, so try to believe him when he says he likes the way you look!

wow.. thanks. i feel much better now. 3 days on imuran and im fine. doc said i would know it if it didnt agree with me.
hope the skin clears up sooner than a few months!
and i just got some nookie .. woohoo!

Here's what I found...

The newest approved treatment is Neoral (cyclosporin), which works directly on the T cells. It is only safe to use for a time-no more than 6 to 12 months at a time. Also evolving is the use of Cellcept (mycophenolate Mofetil), which seems to have fewer side effects. Psoriasis is an active area of medical research, and new developments are continually being put forth.

I've had severe eczema issues that were terrible when I was a kid, so I know how embarassing and painful skin conditions can be, hope you find relief soon.

How are you? I know this is a really old post but I'm wondering how things went with the imuran and your skin? I have uc and horrible psoriasis and am wondering what route to take next. My doctor suggested Imuran and while I'd love to have no uc and clear skin (tbh I think my skin bugs me more than the uc!) I am scared of taking such a powerful drug. I am very interested to know how your journey with uc and psoriasis has gone over the past few years?
