After over 10 years of suffering, I went through one last night of horrible pain. On Monday I woke up in a pain I had never felt before. I was completley incapable of moving at all. My wife called the paramedics.

I was working on getting over a flare up for the past few months, but after 10 years the colitis finally took its toll. My colon had ruptured, and I had to have emergency surgery to have a total colectomy.

Needless to say, it was very scary. It was just yesterday that I was actually becoming coherrent. It looks like its gonna take another week or so to recover from the surgery, but now Im looking forward to all the things I wont have to deal with any more. The meds, the blood, the pain, colon cancer, colonoscopies. Getting used to this ostomy bag isnt gonna be any fun at all. And Im certain that Im no where near finished dealing with the emotions involved with the acceptance of whats happened. Thank god though I have an amazing wife, and some close wonderful friends.

I do know Ive seen a link to the person who knows all about the JPouch surgery. Can anyone link that post/article?

Oh John....bittersweet relief of not having to deal with all you've been through before the ostomy, and I can truly imagine the emotional and physical healing you'll be going though now.

I'm glad to hear the worst is over, and that with the support you have from your wife and friends, you will no doubt handle it with the dignity you did whilst with UC.

I cannot help with the links you request, but I know Sue and others will do so.

I wish you a speedy recovery.

Without wishing to belittle what's happened,I'm sure this will be a blessing in disguise for you.There have been many times whilst flaring,that I've wished something would take the decision of having surgery out of my hands.It will obviously take a period of adjustment for you now,but you can at least be assured that the threat of another flare up has been removed from your life.Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

I am so glad that you were able to get to the hospital in time. I'm sorry you had to endure such pain but at least now it's over and you can get back to your life. Hang in there and please keep us updated on your condition.

Im glad your ok. I know that if my diet fails I would rather have surgery then be on pred.

That is probably the worst way to lose a colon but glad to hear that you caught it and had the surgery. Take your time with recovery and make sure in very good health before proceeding with your next surgery. Once you are up on your feet, email me and I can direct you to a great jpouch support meeting in Los Angeles.

Thank you all for your kind words. Sounds like Ill be released from the hospital today. So far, so good. I will pop back on to let you all know how the recovery is coming.

So glad to hear you are doing all right after that horrible experience. Now I pray you will heal fast .
