Dear all,

Do you know how well Apriso works? My GI has asked me to substitute Asacol by Apriso. It has the same ingredient, mesalamine, but one only takes 4 capsules 1 time. I haven't started it yet, but I was wondering if it had any unpleasant side effects. He switched the meds because I've been feeling very bloated.

I'm on it and I love it. I was doing well on Asacol, but having trouble remembering my noon dose, so wanted to switch. I've been on it almost two months now and am doing great.
If you're only taking 9 Asacol per day, I think you could probably get away with 3 Apriso per day instead of 4.

I second fruitgirl's post. I have also been on it about 2 months, the transition from Asacol to Apriso was seamless. It is about twice as expensive, but fruitgirl told me about the "apriso savings card."

You can save $600 total using that card. From what I understand, most big box pharmacies can process this card as a "secondary" insurance. Unfortunately my pharmacy can't (I have to go to the hospital pharmacy where I work). You mail them some stuff (your receipt and a copy of your "card") and a check comes in the mail almost 2 months later.

My dr. started me on Apriso last week after colonoscopy. The Colazal wasn't working anymore. I am a bit worried because the dosage is supposed to be 4 pills a day. I was having so much bleeding and the inflammation was so bad that he doubled my dosage to 8 pills and added cortienema once a day (am doing proctofoam in the morning, too). Then the bleeding was so bad on Wednesday (colonoscopy was on Monday) the entire bowl was full of red blood. The dr. then put me on prednisone 40 mg., too even though after the colonoscopy he told me he hated prednisone and it would be a last resort. So, anyone ever been on 8 pills a day? I think he wants me to get into remission and then take it down to 4 a day. I hope I am feeling better by next week when I have to go back to work.

I am currently taking Lialda.  Is Apriso the same type of medicine? Also to Disneynut66, why are you on Proctofoam? What is it suppose to help with? Thanks

Thanks so much for the replies. So far it's been ok. the $600 discount will certainly help, but in the long run it'll get quite expensive.

Proctofoam is a foam you inject. I can use it in the morning whereas you can't really use the Cortenema in the morning. I use both. I was using the Proctofoam twice a day (it says you can use 3 times a day), but I needed prendnisone and the enema, too. It is quite a small amount so it is much nicer than the enema. So, if it still worked, I would still use it by itself. It is quite expensive ($60 co-pay). My last flare I was able to use it with just the Colazal and I got out of my flare. Not so lucky this time.

I can't believe I forgot to show may card at the pharmacy. I just wasted $50!

You didn't waste the $50.00. Here is how I get my money:
1. Photocopy the front of your card (it has your "group number" on it)
2. Photocopy the "tax receipt" from the pharmacy (save the copy for your records)
3. Send the copy of the card and the original receipt (and I always send a letter with my name, address, phone number, and e-mail address) to the address on the back of the card (I think in Cincinnati).
4. Wait about 8 weeks and you'll get your $50.00
