6mp/teacher/swine flu please help

Im am down to 50 mg of 6mp bc of it lowering my white blood count.  I am wondering is 50 mg even doing anything?  We have had a case of swine flu at my school (im a teacher) .  I am very worried about getting sick.  If you were me, would you just stop the 6mp?  I plan on calling my doctor tomorrow morning but was just curious what would you do?  I am not in remission.

If I were you I'd keep doing the 6MP and call the doctor in the morning - and keep washing your hands, etc as they say.
It sure is scary; I think a lot of us are going to be nervous about making the right decisions this year, because of this flu thing.

I am scared too. I am on Remicade and just started on Prednisone 60mg again. I work at the front desk in an assisted living residence. I come in contact with so many people not to mention the residents who live there. I am so worried about being in there this winter with the swine flu and other sicknesses. I want to quit just to be safe.

     Britney....I had the same problem.  The doctor had me on 100 mgm of the 6MP and my white count went down to 1.6.  He took me off the med for a few weeks and thankfully my white count went up to 5.0.  Now, he put me on 50 mgm.  Do you have your CBC drawn monthly?  I would say a safe level would be 3.5 and NOT below.  Normal is 4.0 to 10.0.  My GI said if it stays at the normal level my system attacks itself.  At least at 3.5 you have some antibodies.  My husband and I are retired and stay away from crowds and kids during the flu season.  Wash you hands a LOT.

I think it is good to be concerned. However, I think that you need to keep in mind that if you stress yourself out over it - the stress will make you more likely to get sick - so try to stay level-headed. I am not the best at this - but I know the last time I was really sick and kept getting worse - I was also freaking out about it - which is a bad combo. Good luck, Stay well!!

I'm right there with worrying. There are 84 confirmed cases at the university where my son takes a couple classes and one of his best friends is sick with what they suspect is Swine Flu. He is running a fever of 103! Both my IBDers are on immune-suppressors. My daughter recently had to have her dose lowered due to lowered white count and liver issues.

I am just dreading this!!! My daughter's Ped GI is NOT recommending the vaccine shot for her patients as she herself dose not feel safe taking it. She does recommend the regular flu vaccine. She wrote my daughter and Rx for Tamiflu and said if anyone in the family comes down with it, call her and she will Rx it for everyone.

What I loved last school year was that my daughter's teacher was a germ-a-phobe and ran a very tight ship. If she saw a kid with finger in their mouth or nose, she sent them to the in classroom sink and made them wash. This years teacher doesn't even have them was or use hand sanitizer before snack time, UGH!! My daughter keep some in her desk and lunch box to use.

Our newspaper said today that by the time the vaccine is available, Swine Flu will likely have run it's course in our town since we are being hit so early.

Wash, wash, wash your hands!!! If it is in your power, have your kiddos do the same. Provide Germ-X for your classroom.

I hope your are able to get your UC under control and avoid the Swine Flu!! Keep us posted!

Hey all,

I am on 100 mgs of Azathioprine (a "cousin" of 6MP). A couple of weeks back, my daughter (5 years old) was sick with D, then a high fever and body aches. I posted on here that I was worried I passed the darned UC on to her. I finally took her to the doc and she had Swine Flu. She is a healthy kid with no medical issues.

I was worried about catching Swine Flu with my "compromised immune system" and then she goes about and gets it. As people usually are with their little kids, we kiss, hug, cuddle, etc. I never got it. And I am a physical therapist who comes in contact with a lot of sick older folks. Of course hand washing is the norm in a health care facility.

So, I guess the lesson to be learned from my case is hand washing is important, but if you are gonna get it, you are gonna get it! :)
