Possibly. Because Epstein-Barr is mono. So unless someone drooled on the needle...

I work in infectious disease at the university here, and they say this virus hits you like a truck.  If you feel like you want to die you should see your doctor immediately and be adamant about getting Tamiflu.  From what I have been told, Tamiflu is working against H1N1.  It prevent the virus from entering your cells and replicating. 

So, with that info, I will not be getting the vaccination, but will be proactive in my recovery if I do feel like I get it.

You ain't kiddin' when you say the flu hits you like a truck! Omgoodness I never ever want to get that again! It was horrible.

I think I'll follow the common sense route: wash hands frequently, keep hands away from face, avoid those that are sick, etc. I think the risks of the vaccine outweigh the risks of the flu. That's my personal choice. I just think it's a shame most people never get the whole story, in order to make an informed decision.

I've never gotten any kind of flu shot in my life. I hate shots and I don't think a flu is the end of the world. I don't have kids or work in a school or a place with germs so I don't come in contact with too much. Not to say I never get sick because I do but never where I think "I wish I had gotten a flu shot".

You can get the nasal mist instead, would you?

It's been a long time since I've taken the shot for years now, but when I got the flu, it caused very severe flaring and was really pretty dangerous for me.

Wash you hands a lot!

Yes, I had the swine flu back in the 70's and I was literally in bed for two weeks and lost about 20 lbs. I'm pretty fortunate so far that I haven't been sick this year and that is due to being very proactive with washing hands and keeping them away from my eyes, nose, mouth, and ears. I also use antibacterial wipes around the house, although many believe that it doesn't help much. Oh, and I use a nasal irrigator -- some might prefer a netipot...works well!

I get the flu shot each year and so does my son who has asthma. I think I had flu once, in bed for a week and not a pleasant time. Now i'm immunocompromised through azathioprine and my son's lungs are at risk, then I won't hesitate to have it.

Well those numbers they reported are nowhere near what they should be. Total up adults and children and its getting closer.

Anyways, it really sucks about your son. Do you specify or ask what shot you and your son are getting?

I just saw statistics that the vast majority of the children who have died from complications of H1N1 were high risk for any flu. They had cerebral palsy, heart or lung disease or other chronic medical problems. Those little ones are at risk from any infection they get.

So far, this "superflu" appears to be about like the garden variety seasonal flu in most ways.

Maybe I would get the nasal mist if it were free. I don't have insurance so I can only do minimum medical treatment. It is frustrating to not take care of yourself how you would like to but that's life... I didn't get the shots when I had insurance either. I am a neurotic handwasher.

Hi

I have UC and am starting chemo for breast cancer.  I will be getting the flu vaccine but not the other one.  All chemo patients in this facility are vaccinated because it is not a "live virus".  If chemo patients get it, I would think most people can and should get it.

I just got a letter from my GI's office and it notes that "if you are currently taking immunosuppressive medications to treat your disease, national guidelines recommend that you receive a seasonal influenza vaccination (with inactivated vaccine) on an annual basis in the fall and a pneumococcal vaccination every 5 years. This year, is is also recommended that you receive the Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent vaccine (with inactivated vaccine)."

Sadly, today I start on a two and a half month regimen of hydrocortisone enemas. Seton placement surgery yesterday, hydrocortisone enemas starting today, and now some flu shots in the future. There's got to be a better roller-coaster than this.
