Home made enemas

Hi there, I'm fighting with a flare right now, so I'd like to try something to go along with my salofalk enemas. My colitis is low down in the rectum so enemas work quite well.

Has anyone ever tried making their own bum cocktails? I've heard that slippery elm and vitamin e, aloe etc can help heal topically, so why not up the bum?

I talked to my GI about it and he actually thought it would be worth trying. I'd love to hear if anyone has ever tried this.

I've read that some women use vitamin e capsules as suppositories for their vaginas, so I imagine you could probably use them for the rectum also. Do you think there would be any problem with using a vitamin e capsule as a suppository?

ETA: Can I have a compounding pharmacy make enemas up for me?

There are a bunch of threads on homemade enemas. I have used about everything I could think of.

The directions call for filtered or spring water (2 cups). I use a standard disposable enema kit (which I clean and use several times). As a retention enema, the idea is to keep it in your colon for as long as possible - at least one hour - moving from your right side to your back to your left side (or whatever order you prefer).

I thought about a probiotic enema. Squirt the good bacteria directly to the site. I mentioned it to my NP and she thought it was an interesting idea.

Interesting you used probiotics to cure the D. I really think there should be more research done with this idea.

How much of the powders and stuff do you use?

1 teaspoon of each. I should mention that this treatment is most effective after a bowel movement or when your colon is most clear.

TPT. Do you mean soy lecithin, or is there a soy lectin? Is that something mixed with the e already or do you have to get that separately?

My flare seems to be diminishing slowly. I've been adding e capsules to my Salofalk enemas. I'm working my way up to 8000IUs.

I found a study that was done in a hospital in Tehran that used added e enemas to the patients regimen and 9 out of 15 patients went into remission after 3 months.

They used tocopherol acetate. Is that a natural e oil. I was always under the impression that the topical e oils were synthetic.

It sounds like it does have some promise anyway. My GI gave me the go ahead to try my own enemas.
