HI,

was wondering if any of you guys are still bleeding even if youre taking meds. is it common to bleed even if its "under control" (whatever that means). I was diagnosed w/ UC last Oct, and have been taking Salofalk, but im still bleeding. and its making me nervous - i dont want to end up in the hospital to have another blood transfusion! I think i might need stronger medication. any medcations that i should stay away from? Also, how would i know what foods are making me feel worse? my GI never sent me to a food allergist or anything. anyone know any good GI's and or food allergists in Toronto?

Hi, welcome to Healingwell :) Usually bleeding is never acceptable because long term bleeding can lead to complications such as anemia and other possible health problems. What other meds are you on at this time? Do you know where in your colon your Uc is?

Regarding food, many GI's will not comment on foods because with Uc, food intolerances are an individual thing. It's trial and error. You can keep a food diary and record everything you eat as well as the symptoms that follow (if any). You need to record every SINGLE thing that enters your mouth. But if you do this, remember that it takes 12-72 hours for food to enter your mouth and reach your colon. Sometimes this diary is helpful to pinpoint any foods that seem to be bothering you.

Hi, How much are you bleeding? Some red on the TP, or blood on the stool, or the toilet water turns red?
Blood isn't good. Sometimes we have some once in while - I'll get some from from hemmies acting up, or even when I'm healing and not really flaring, just because the tissue is so fragile and some scratchy food aggravated it.
I think you should see the doctor and find out if there's an additional medication you might take to help prevent you from having to do the hospital/transfusion thing!
And things you might do for yourself might include probiotics, that food diary, and maybe especially watching out for some things that bother many of us: "sharp" raw foods, fatty/greasy, acidy/spicy.....

Hi NINA427,

If you still are bleeding your UC is not fully under control. It is possible that your Salofalk is not reaching your entire colon. Have you considered using rectal medications as well? Ask your doctor about them.
