Anemia problem-Cant take iron supplements-Plz help

Hello.

I suffer from UC since 1 and a half year. And am actually on salazopyrine. Am actually suffering from anemia but the problem is that as soon as I take an iron supplement, I start to vomit badly. Am depressed I dunno what to do. confused

Do you guys here get same problem with iron supplements?

I wd be glad if u could advise me.Thks in advance

What iron supplement are you taking? When my iron levels were low I took Slow-Fe as it's supposed to be a lot easier to digest, and it worked out fine.

Don't get depressed about it...there's a lot of different iron supplements out there, so hopefully one should work for you. And you could have a word with your doctor to see what they recommend you do.

Its a french brand called Fer UCB:Iron (Ferrous Chloride Tetrahydrate) . I called my doctor yesterday n he advised me an iron syrup something like that. But I havent bought it yet. I am afraid I might vomit again n get stomach upset n all.

I had that problem, and i swtiched to chromagen (sp?) and its releaseddifferenty and i didnt have any trouble.

I read spinach is a good source of iron. Does any1 know if people with UC can eat it without any problem?

Many of our members eat spinach regularly. There are a few of us who don't tolerate it, but most do.

I was anemic too, and my doc told me raisins are a great source or iron too. You might want to look into more food that's high in iron as well as some of the supplements others mentioned above; here is a link:

I heard clams and oysters are the best for iron. I have also heard that you have to take a LOT of iron in order to see any improvement because a lot of it is not absorbed. I've been taking http://www.vitacost.com/Enzymatic-Therapy-Ultimate-Iron They have helped a ton. They are more of a gelcap than a pill. I hope you find something that works for you.

Hi sad girl ... I was really low on iron and found that making a juice with spinach, carrot and celery really helped, having the veg as a juice means no bitty bits of veto upset the colon... thats what I have experienced anyway, it may give you a bit of wind but it replaces lost nutrients.

I recommend 2 juices a day for 1 week then 1 a day after that.

Raw spinach would upset my gut, but I could handle it OK cooked (well done).
I think the juicing is a good idea.

Iron pills didn't agree with me either.

I eat cheerios. It's the only cereal I can find that is both low in sugar and high in iron at the same time.

yea iron pills are a pain for me also

i cant take iron pills either.
they excerbate inflammation of the colon so they arent good for you while flaring anyway.

i get aneamic every few months and i have to have IRON INFUSIONS at the hospital.
takes 6 hours but then your gold for months.
its the only way i can do it.

I havent had diarrhoea when drinking juices, they seem to just give a bit of wind. Try it for a few days and see what happens.

Have you tried the iron formulas ie Floradix ?

I also had iron infusions, but they were outpatient and I want to say they took a couple of hours. Mine were administered in a chemo clinic. Everyone had a comfy chair and brought stuff to read, dozed or watched TV.

ya, same. outpatient, but at the hospital. all the recliners and magazines and tv's and the chemo patients and everything else similar. 6 hours in australia. they do it as slow as possible to reduce any and all side effects. so ive been told.

No I havent yet.

Does it go easy with the gut??Wat r the side effects?

I've tried different forms of iron supplements but the one that agreed with me completely is SlowFE. It was real easy on my stomach and didn't cause D. Have you tried that yet?
