Mine was terrible as well. ive only had one. woke up in the middle in pain. it sucked big time. i dont want to do another, but guess what.

They definitely can hurt when the air is being pumped in and the doc is going around the upper left (splenic flexure) and the right (hepatic flexure) bends...on the way back, it's not painful at all.

I request to not be out...but give me drugs. I hate the Versed and now have a small amount, but still take the Fentanyl.

I watch the monitor, ask the doc questions and the answers. It's painful, yes, and have a few times needed a bit more pain med.

It's unfortunate, Clicky, that your doc got so put out by your discomfort, especially since your colon is in such a precarious state. I can understand from her perspective that the process didn't go as smoothly as she would have liked and it was probably unexpected that you were that uncomfortable (yeah, I'll bet the docs have never had one).

When you go for your biopsy results, make sure you get them firstly, get a copy of them and then tell her that you were very upset about the process. What can she do next time to make you more comfortable so that the experience can be smooth for both of you....or something like that.

When do you go back to see her?

Is she your regular GI? or is she just the one who did the scope?

I would make a point to say Give me EXTRA !!! so that will not happen again. Like i said my first was a breeze the prep was the worst. I am sure if you let them know if you start to wake they can tell they will knock you right back out again ! Best of Luck I am sure it will be fine

You just reminded me of the moment they put the sedative in my IV, it hurt really bad. The nurse told me it might sting but it actually HURT badly. They also put the IV in the vein coming from my pinky finger and I have really skinny hands. It hurt for weeks after. I still don't understand why they would choose that little tiny vein when I have other good veins in my hand. I can't complain though, it sounds like a lot of people had much worse experiences.

I had a sigmoidoscopy once and I was fully awake for that. It was uncomfortable.

hi, just read your mail.. no ; don't understand.. she was obviously not very good at what she does.. I have had colonosphys every 6months and never experience any pain.. even in a flare up.. hope you can find another doctor soon.. no way should you be in pain.. you can e-mail me ** anytime... good luck to you..

I am at awe to hear some of these stories. I have had 2 colonoscopys and didn't feel either (thank God). I am sorry to hear some of these horror stories. I hope that neither of you have to experience that again.

When I had my first colonoscopy they put me completely under. I had an IV in my hand. Prep wasn't too horrible, neither was the IV, but my metabolism's so fast I guess I needed more stuff. It didn't hurt or anything. But I woke up coughing so much, then they pushed some... what're they called... some asthma thing spewing out albuterol like a fog machine, that kinda made it worse, I pushed it away... they moved me, I asked for a bedpan, couldn't poo in front of everyone, tried to hold it, couldn't, said, "I have to go," sat up, nurse pushed me down, I shoved her and somehow managed to find and make it into the bathroom (but then I lost it on the floor). But I didn't hurt after the colonoscopy. I would find a new doctor and ask to be put under.

I'd be shopping for a new GI! UC is bad enough, but to be treated that way is inexcusable.

Colonoscopies are considered minor surgical procedures and the majority of doctors won't use general anesthetic. They almost always use IV fentanyl with either propofol or versed.

I should think that screaming despite being sedated is a pretty good indication that you are in severe, and genuine pain.

People who are just bunging it on will just sleep through their sedation: you couldn't.

I'm appalled that you were treated like this.

I don't know what they used, but the last two c-scopes I had they were using some pretty good stuff!

I woke up in recovery feeling pretty good and passing copious quantities of gas!

My first scope was also a horror story. I was heavily sedated but afterward remembered hearing "someone screaming." Yep, that would be me. Difference was my doc stopped the procedure and told me in recovery that my colon was inflamed and spasming too much to get all the way around. I was then sent for a barium enema and x-rays.

After that time, I've warned everyone who's going to scope me that I need plenty of meds. If you are a smallish person - I'm a petite female - you can also request a pediatric scope which makes the process easier. I've had a few scopes since that first bad one and haven't had any problems since; however, I've been in remission for a long time. I'm sure a lack of active inflammation has played apart in my successful scopes.
