The floradix is just a formula you can buy over the counter ... or online ... holland and barrett sell it ..... are you uk or usa ??????

My 14 year old had to go on iron supplements.  The doctor put him on ferrous gluconate tablets which caused a lot of stomachaches/cramping for him.  We then tried SloFE, which did the same thing.  I then bought Fergon (a Bayer product) which is a form of ferrous gluconate, but coated differently than the tablets we had initially tried.  It is also a slightly lower dose per pill.  My son tolerates these very well.  Best of luck to you....

As a natural alternative nettle is supposed to be good for treating anemia.  I havent tried this myself yet because I havent needed it recently so I dont know how effective it is.  I stumbled across this info in a magazine and while researching further found that it is also used to treat various digestive tract disorders.  Heres a link for more info...

See if your doctor will approve a blood infusion.

I was very anemic ( Hemo of 75, should be 135 ). Doctor gave me ferrous fumarate which I don't tolerate well. My GP wanted to give me a blood infusion but the GI didn't want too...only becasue it's too much work. Next time, I'm getting the infusion. I don't tolerate iron pills well.

BTW: I don't know why, but if there are warnings that iron should not be taken if you have UC. Perhaps someone knows why, my GI gave me a funny look when I mentioned this but if you do a search there is a warning fo with gastro issues, peptic ulcers and UC taking Ferrous Fumarate. Maybe different for other types of iron?

I guess I am one who reacts badly to iron supplementation - worse D and cramping etc. I think - it is hard to know cause and effect with this cursed condition.

Hmm... Iron can cause diarrhea, but it is needed if one is anemic.

Sadgirl, I do not believe that SlowFE is the same as 'Slow Release Feroglobin-B12'. I am not that "up" on iron supplements but here is a link that tells you more about SlowFE:

      I experience a sharp pain in my colon, I have been cutting my pills in half. I am taking them every other day. try it maybe it will work. even with my half dose i still experience some kind of discomfort. let me know if it work.

Oh am from Mauritius!

Anyone heard of the iron pill called Orofer (Iron III hydroxide polymaltose complex) ?My doctor prescribed me that!

I have noticed that iron pills of the ferrous type creates problems in the gut!

Does iron infusion same thing as iron injection?

Bcz I asked my doctor abt iron injection but he told me that he is against them. I wonder why?

Yes maybe but am not sure.

Oh unfortunately I checked in most pharmacies in Mauritius but they arent available in Mauritius.

There is only the 'Slow Release Feroglobin-B12'! sad

Hi, My daughter gets anemic too and doesn't tolerate many iron supplements. The ferrous sulfate which her dr. prescribes, is way too disruptive to her system, especially during a flare. The Floradix comes in liquid form and also has vit b & c and other stuff to help it absorb better, is non constipating, and doesn't reallly cause any g.i. upset. It is ferrous gluconate instead of ferrous sulfate. But it's not a very high dose of iron. One serving only has 10mg of elemental iron , and when you get anemic you need like 325 mg. But it's better than nothing.

I have low iron but not exactly anemia. I take iron supplements on and off - a few weeks on, a few weeks off. I find the negative gut effects come a few weeks after daily supplemetation. I eat leafy stuff like spinach and I also eat raisins and other high iron foods too.
