Anyone else have lower back pain? I am reading it can be associated to UC...mine is really painful...any tips on what to do for it? And what is the corilation between the two...

It can be associated with ALOT of different things.

I know for myself during my severe flares with my crohn's colitis (CD affecting the colon) I had such bad lower back pains that they'd put me into tears every (30+ times a day) bowel movements...I was at my wits end, the only thing that helped (actually stopped the back pain) was the bee propolis (listed in my sig) which also stopped my bleeding, excess mucous and cut back my 30+ daily BM's to about 15/day, that's why I added more supplements to my regime, to cut them down even further.

I've had lower back pain pretty much my whole life since I was 11 (I'm now 55).

When I'm flaring, the pain is worse....of course, when I had periods the pain was worse as well.

I don't have UC-related spinal disease....I have narrowing of the discs and some osteoarthritis. The chiropractor does help me a lot.

You might want to consider to try Robaxacet (not the platinum kind). The methocarbamol is the active ingredient that can help relax the muscles...it helps to take the edge off.

Heather, is Robaxacet otc or prescription? I am trying to find a muscle relaxer that doesn't turn me into a zombie like Flexeril or Skelaxin does.

Turnpkegates, I have had lower back pain for a long time. I have been to physical therapy, have had corticosteroid injections and medication. I have had every test imaginable but yet no one can tell me the cause of my back and hip pain. It does seem to get worse when I flare however when I am in remission (like I am now) the pain is still there but managable. So don't assume that lower back pain can be from having just Uc alone. That is the mistake that many people with Uc make; that is to assume that all pain is Uc related. So if this lower back pain continues, please go to your doctor because Ibd'ers have a higher percentage of getting two types of arthritis, AS (ankylosing spondylitis) and RA (rheumatoid arthritis).

It's over the counter Sherry.

You can purchase the Robaxin alone (the muscle relaxant methocarbamol....it's expensive, but you can add it to the Robaxacet).

I use the Costco brand back relaxant med....

I agree with getting our backs checked out thoroughly with an x-ray or MRI.

The above mentioned by Sherry of RA or AS can be checked out through blood tests.

Of course, one can have mechanical or disease induced back problems at the same time...

I had an MRI that showed slightly bulging discs, but no arthritis. I've had physical therapy, myofascial release therapy, chiropractic therapy, cortisteroid shots, and I do regular strength and flexibility training.

I seem to have conquered the muscle spasms, but my back is still very stiff and I get a lot of pain, especially after gardening and golf. ICE is best. And now that Remicade has helped me, I take Aleve regularly, which helps a lot. I have some Rx muscle relaxers and pain killers, but I don't think they do much.

Is it related to the UC? Who knows.

     I have back pain too, but I attributed it to my osteoporosis.  My pain is more in the thoracic region.  I did lift a heavy drawer about a month ago and think I may have strained my back.  That was really dumb of me.  Five years ago I took a flop and suffered a compressed fracture of the lumbar spine.  The only thing I take for osteoporosis is Calcium with vitamin D.  Fosamax and Actonel give me upper gastric distress and I don't think enough research has been done on Boniva injections.

Hi turnpkegates,

I experience lower back pain that I can only associate with my UC.  (It happens when I'm flaring - and has even acted a sign to warm a flare is on its way!)

In general, I try to avoid any additional pills and medications that I can ...

My tip - try to grab one of the heated oat bags.  (That you heat in the microwave.)  It certainly doesn't get rid of the pain, but the combination of the pressure and warmth has helped me.  You can pick one up at the drug store, or I got mine at a craft sale.
