I have been trying to pinpoint why I have more gut problems under certain circumstances than others. Anyone have any idea whether certain dishwashing detergents might exacerbate UC/IBS? I am thinking about the Ultra Dawn I have been using for a few years, and the fact that when I am away from home for days eg. travelling I often feel better.

Hey, that's what I use at home. I don't notice a change when I leave home. I don't think it's that.

I would doubt that it's that. Do you use potpourri or something? For some reason when I'm at my aunt's house I always have to poo more and stuff. Or maybe there's an allergen or something, who knows.

I am obviously really reaching here, but when I travel away from home I am usually better, and symptoms get worse when I get back. I cannot find anything besides the Dawn that is different. I drink filtered water and take the same supplements etc. whether travelling or home. Maybe I'll pick up a different detergent tomorrow and try it and see... Amazing where this condition can take us!

We all know how you feel though, you would do ANYTHING if you just figured out what it was that was causing it. It's really maddening!

It could be a chemical in the soap, so who knows, everyone is different. Maybe when you go somewhere out of town for a while, you are more relaxed and so less stress? who knows! good luck!

maybe not being at home keeps your adrenaline up a bit so you might not have as many symptoms?

have you not tried changing the dawn to another brand such as Palmolive?

Which one in particular do you use? Some stink so bad I don't know how some can use them...even the ones for sensitive skin...even worse of a smell, believe it or not. I find the fragrance for the regular greem palmolive the least offensive to me.

Or...it could be you just don't like washing dishes??

If I go away for a day or two my gut often behaves better during that time. If I'm away a week or more, that aint' necessarily the case.
Some time ago some of us discussed that sometimes our innards behave better if we get up and go out to work rather than sitting around thinking about it... Is this a tendency toward IBS? Is it that the emotions of being elsewhere release chemicals that keep the gut quiet, as Quincy suggested?
I've noticed this and wondered for decades!
The gut does respond to all this somehow. I've noticed that when our family arrives home after visiting family 800 miles away, within 15 minutes we're all visiting the bathroom to poop - even the non-UC members of the family! Something about the "relief" of being home.....? lol

It could be a household cleanser that bothers you. I've become very reactive to Fantastik so I quit buying/using it. It actually gave me chills & made me feel like a UC flare was brewing: horrors! Try wearing plastic gloves if you scrub with strong chemicals doing dishes or other chores at home & avoid breathing any fumes. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

Some people get travellers diarhea and some people can get constipated when travelling, some find they just don't "go" as much when they travel (they don't necessarily have constipation issues).

What about differences in weather conditions and vegetation? I've found different climates affect my health differently. I get more skin problems in hot, wet climates. I always had a stuffy nose when I live in the northeast part of the United States. I don't have a stuffy nose in California. My flares all occurred when the weather turned cold.

Maybe you are eating better quality food on the road? I always feel better when I leave the US and eat out because there is less pre packaged crap food in other countries. When we go down to Jamaica, I end up eating fresh fruits and veggies, and fresh foods. By the end of the week I feel great!

I've also been grabbing at straws for years and years wondering if ________ is causing my problem. Some of my suspects have been: water, toothpaste, suntan lotion, every kind of food imaginable, dust, germs, bacteria...and just about everything else on the planet. Then seemingly out of nowhere..I'll go into a remission and all of a sudden I have no suspects. Strange isn't it? So, it always leads me to believe it's has a strong stress-psychological component. Before the room jumps on me for saying that you need to realize that you can't disconnect the mind from the body. They greatly affect eachother. I'm not doing so good right now so I'm trying to be as kind to my mind as I am to my body. It sure is a tough road.

If dishwashing liquid is doing anything it's cause you're not rinsing it well enough...injesting soap can make you poo. A lot.

More likely though, is stress. I assume when you're traveling you're more relaxed.
