Severe bleeding after colonoscopy

I was also hospitalized after my sigmoidoscopy this year and told that if I didn't respond to medication that I would possible have to have my colon removed (I am 23 years old). First of all, if you have severe ulcerative colitis you should probably not be on antibiotics - they will do nothing for you (I was on antibiotics at the start of my last flare and, as predicted, they did nothing because ulcerative colitis is neither bacterial nor viral). When you say your bleeding is "severe", what do you mean? Are you passing only blood when you have a BM? Is it mixed in with anything else (stool, mucus, etc.)? Can you tell how much blood you're losing, and have you had blood work done to determine how the bleeding has affected your red blood cell/hematocrit level, etc.? Also, if you haven't yet, I would say get yourself to a GI specialist ASAP. GPs are wonderful and perform critical services, but if you have severe ulcerative colitis you NEED to be in the care of a GI specialist, preferably one who's managed many cases of UC and knows how painful and scary the disease is and will work with you on how to best manage it. If you're able to, research as much about UC as you can - it's an *autoimmune* condition where your body attacks the lining of your large intestine, and it's usually immune-modulating drugs (corticosteroids, etc.) that are effective against it. My bleeding has been reduced (not completly gone yet) by prednisone - I would be willing to bet that starting a drug regimen that's actually tailored to your *disease* would help with the bleeding, although you may need some extra help with just the blood loss if it's that bad. Nothing I'm telling you should have greater weight than what a GI specialist can tell you, but I hope it's somewhere for you to start. I'll be praying for you - hang in there, it's scary as hell but it DOES get better.
