Talked to my old college roomate last night ( from 1988 ). We haven't talked in about 12 years.  Just distance.  Back then we were both healthy and full of it.  I mentioned in passing to him about having some colon problems.  He suprised me by sayin about two years ago he had 18 inches of his colon removed then developed UC.  WOW.  I still have all my colon but my symptoms started a little over 2 years ago also.  Weird Huh?

I know its a coincidence but it sure is weird.  Just wanted to share.

Weird coincidence, indeed. What reason did he give for the surgery to remove 18 inches of his colon? / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

He said they found a tumor in there. They haven't found any of those in me.... yet. Thank god. LOL

Hmmmmmmmmm. Now I'm wondering whether he had a flat-lesion tumor. Those are harder to deal with than the protruding kind. Was it benign? / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

I'm assuming it was benign.... I don't know about the Flat-lesion thing... But I'll ask if he makes it down this weekend. He made plans to go deer hunting with me this weekend. Waiting on the call from him to confirm he's coming.

Wow, totally interesting/weird coincidence.

Since you and he know colon lingo, do ask all you can indepth because I think that's a good way to get concise answers.

It's good his cancer was found early....sucks he has UC...or is it "colitis"?

talked to him today... his is colitis. He tumor was benign... But he's questioning the colitis diagnosis. He thinks its UC. His symptoms are just like mine were. I know its a coincidence but its weird.

What is the difference between UC and colitis? I was recently diagnosed with UC at age 67.

"colitis" is a general term inflammation of the colon....depends on the cause which is given a diagnosis and a determined name. Some can be cured, others are chronic such as UC and Crohn's Colitis, Microscopic Colitis, Ischemic Colitis...

UC is loosely termed colitis....but it doesn't mean that all "colitis" is UC.

Just before I got sick 18 yrs ago, I ran into a girl I was friends with from jr high to high school, we chatted for a short bit and she had mentioned she had crohn's I had never even heard of it before, I asked her what it was, she basically explained it as infalmed intestines which cause gut pains (obviously she didn't go into major detail, we were chatting in passing, she seemd to be in a hurry, gee I wonder why LOL)....anyways, we exchanged numbers and that was it....she called me about a week later and explained it in more detail, I was horrified and had a hard time getting my head around the info she was sharing (like I said, I'd never heard of such a thing)....we talked on occassion from then on, then about 2 months later WHAM, I was DX with crohn's, of course I called her and told her all about it, she was so sympathetic (empathetic as well)...then another girl I had gone to school with (got back in touch with one another about 8 yrs after I had CD) got sick with UC (about 4 yrs after we re-connected), so that's 2 friends of mine with an IBD.
