Lialda while Pregnant and Breastfeeding?

I usually take 4 tablets of Lialda per day (1.2) grams, but since my husband and I are thinking of trying for our first baby, I am not sure if it is safe?

From what I've read Lialda is safe during pregnancy, but not recommended for breastfeeding. Breastfeeding is really important to me so I was wondering has anyone breastfed while taking Lialda? Or knows of a different medicine that is safe to take while breastfeeding?

I just had a little girl about a month ago, I took imuran, canasa, and lialda throughout my pregnancy (my signature needs to be updated-sorry!). I'm breastfeeding now with the same list of medicines. Baby is doing great, gaining weight well, and super cute. She has had a stuffy nose off and on, but so has the rest of my family; otherwise she's a perfectly healthy infant.

My lactation consultant/pediatrician were not at all concerned about the lialda. The imuran gave them pause, but we ultimately decided the benefits of breast milk for our baby were preferred over formula, even with the risk from the medications.

I'll post again if we opt to stop for any reason, but I wouldn't worry about the lialda! Good luck to you!

my dr said all those meds can go thru breastmilk, but the benefits of breastfeeding far outweigh any risks associated with those meds.
and the risks are very very minimal as the actual amount that comes thru is so so tiny.

My doctor is very conservative with medications. I have read several similar posts and know my doctor is in the minority on this topic... He told me he would much prefer that I do not take Lialda while pregnant and/or when breastfeeding for the simple fact that there has not been any research done on pregnant women and Lialda. He prefers that once I get pregnant again I try only rectal meds because they are more topical and less systematic. However, I am sure that if I go into a big flare we will have to weigh the risks and benefits. I am currently preparing to start TTC so I stopped Lialda and am tapering off pred. We will see how this works...I am nervous about it but am hoping I will be one of those women who are helped by pregnancy.

spluxa - I am sure that there are many who will totally disagree with me but - I beleive that breastmilk is best when mommy is healthy and not taking any medications, if I get pregnanant and if I have to go back to taking Lialda or pred regularly I will not breastfeed...however, I do not judge anyone who decides to go ahead and breastfeed while on medications - I believe everyone has to make the decision that feels right for them and their situation individually...mom's should be more supportive of each other's decisions - we are all just trying to do the best for our families and children... Congratulations by the way!!! Is this your first?

It seems like there's a little club of us who were diagnosed shortly after childbirth---I was too! I can honestly say I'd never wish being that sick on any new mommy! I plan on having a second, but am also worried about flaring after birth. I find some comfort in that I know I have UC now, so will be able to react quickly if I start to have symptoms of a flare. I'm positive that I got so sick because we didn't know what was wrong and the flare went unmedicated for so long. That won't happen this time!

If I'm still only using the 5-ASA's, I'll definitely try breastfeeding again...I'll just watch the baby really carefully for any side effects, which I think are mostly limited to diarrhea. I kind of wonder, though, if it's anxious moms thinking their baby has diarrhea when they're just having normal breastmilk poop! I had a rough start with my son...he was born three weeks early and got jaundice, which lead to breastfeeding issues (weak suck, etc). We finally got things going really well when I started to get sick. I ultimately got so sick that I lost my supply. I'm still glad that I was able to breastfeed for 8 weeks, though.
