Asacol dosage?

Hello all,

As you can see in my siggy I'm taking 2 Asacol 3 times a day. Now, sometimes (such as today) I forget to take my midday dose. Plus trying to fit fiber in and probiotics and not take all this at the same time. I read that you shouldn't take fiber with other meds b/c it might affect the way they work. Would it be the same to take 3 Asacol 2 times a day? I have an appt with my GI the end of the month and I don't want to mess with anything really b/c I'm doing so much better. But, I'd really like to just have to take it twice a day. I also know there are other 5-ASA meds you don't have to take as often but I'm kinda scared to mess with what's working.

I'm not sure on that one. I think quincy maybe just takes her Asacol twice daily, but I might be wrong.

As for switching from Asacol to one of the once-daily mesalamines (Apriso and Lialda), I did it and I LOVE it!!!!!! I'm on Apriso now. I had no problems with the transition...if anything, my remission is more solid since I switched, but that could simply be because I'm further from my flare, and therefore more "healed." But, taking Apriso just once in the morning was *so* freeing. I'm not one to despise taking meds or anything, but it was kind of a PITA to take Asacol three times a day. Like you, I had problems remembering the midday dose.

And, as an added bonus, both Apriso and Lialda have co-pay reimbursement programs. They're new meds, and it's the pharma companies' way of "hooking" you. So instead of paying $15/month for Asacol, or $35/month for Apriso, I'm paying nothing. It's pretty sweet!

That should be fine. I was taking 12 a day, my GI told me I could either take 4 3times a day, or 6 twice a day. I am now only taking 10 per day, 5 around 9am and 5 around 9pm.

I had the same issue when I was on Asacol, my new GI switched me to Lialda which has been pretty good, not to mention you only need to take 1 dose a day.

My son's GI (who has said she'll switch him to Lialda once he's been in remission 2 years) told him he could take his 8 Asacol as 4 in morning and 4 at night rather than 3 morning, 2 midday, 3 at night.
