I am 16 and have lived with the disease for 2 years now

- I am on omeprozole, Asocole tablets and 6mp

It has now got to that time in my life where i am thinking about going to the next stage with my boyfriend..

I know this may seem like a stupid question but i am so confused and when i asked the consultant she just said that she was not in the position to give me advice on this..

Anyways.. what i would like to know is what contreception i should used.. i want to be safe but dont feel that condoms is enough.. Is it ok to go on the pill with the tablets i am on??.. or is the rod a better option ??.. pleasee help (: xx

I'm on the pill, (I'm not on 6mp though), the docs know I'm on the pill and they have never said there was a problem. Just need to be careful if when you're flaring you're not absorbing them. Also remember that the pill alone doesn't protect from sexually transmitted infections. If you're not sure about interactions you could check with a pharmacist.

The pill is safe and will prevent pregnancy.

Be sure to also use condoms to prevent disease. Or as we used to say, "No party hat, no party."

Please be sure YOU are REALLY ready. There is no rush to lose your virginity. Ok, enough preaching. I would say the pill would be ok and definitely still wear a condom EVERY time. There are things you can catch that cannot be seen with the naked eye that can stick with you for the rest of your life!

I suggest that you make an appointment at Planned Parenthood to discuss all of your birth control options. I am on the pill and have no issues related to my UC. Some women seem to have trouble with the pill, though. I agree that it's a good idea to double up on birth control, especially at such a young age. And, I also have to throw in a "There's no rush to loose your virginity!"

Oh please wait,Don't give in.Someday in your future you will meet that special someone and he will love you regardless of you giving in to his raging harmones.On your wedding day you can share that special moment with the man that truly loves you.Don't take that chance of making your young life difficult with a child.Don't take me wrong I love children.You don't need anymore medical issues by taking Birth Control pills.When we are young we sometimes let feelings of that nature control whats best for our lives.Talk to your counselor,teacher someone you trust not someone that has fallen into temptation because misery loves company.Best Wishes.48 yr old male,married with 3 daughters and 4 grandchildren. I'm not going to "lecture" you just because you are 16 (believe me there are plenty of 16 yr olds that have more sense than some adult women) but it's not MY place to lecture you on YOUR decision (afterall, I was 16 once too and I have no regrets, it may not be like that for everyone but it is for many).

The birth control pill can be harder for IBDers to absorb since we naturally have issues with absorption...the birth control pill can also exacerbate symptoms of IBD for many many women (same reason why for many women their symptoms can get worse during their monthly period), talk to a family planning counselor or your GP to get different ideas of birth control, remember, the pill isn't 100% either, many women have gotten pregnant being on the pill.

I feel qualified to give an opinion, i have a 16 year old and use to be 16!!! Will give you my perspective on what worked. My daughter is not sexually active, but is on the pill. Tried YAZ, and it didn't keep the bleeding down, but that is the first one to try for any IBD'ers. Low hormone pill. Now on Yasmin, it worked like a charm. Her need was to control bleeding, and with ongoing trauma of bleeding rectally, she couldn't take anymore. Anemic and so on. Blood, blood everywhere-needed to control something!
When sex is right for you, it will probably still be too early by any "grown up" standards---just don't add a baby to the mix. The pill is pretty safe and very effective if you take it as you need to. If you have increased "D", talk to your doc--we told all to ours. She has many students on BC with Crohns and Colitis, and follows this path. She didn't do an internal exam, just an ultrasound, to ensure the parts were all there and working. Don't let anyone judge you, including a doctor. Be safe and careful with your body-it is all you have, and listen to its signals. If the pill doesn't work, ther are many other birth control methods that might.

I'm with the Pirate on this one, plus there are side effects to the pill and an increased chance of aggravating your symptoms. Ultimately, it's your decision and I hope you really take the time to think about it and hopefully whatever you decide, it works out for you. I still think you are so young but it's your life. Just make sure the guy is respectful if you choose to be with him. Good luck Kiddo.

you can consider birth control that bypasses the need to digest a pill and risk upsetting the UC ... the patch, Nuvaring, and IUDs are options, although I don't know if there is an age requirement for the IUD though ...

Go talk to a Ob/Gyn about birth control options.  Share your history with her about your medications and UC.  DO NOT LIE about ANYTHING and ASK TONS OF QUESTIONS--trust me, there is nothing too embarassing.

Just a warning, since it's going to be your first time, sex during a flare hurts.  A lot.  Don't judge whether you enjoy sex or not based on just one experience with it.  Actually... that's good advice for anyone contemplating losing their virginity ;-)

Just remember that once you give your purity away, you can never get it back. I know you think you will be with this person forever, and if that is true, then make it special after you have commited your lives to each other forever through marriage. Trust me I know how guys can be, the true test of the commitment of a man is he will stay with you, even if you don't give in.....I am proud to say that I stayed a virgin until my wedding night, and i was 25 when i got married, so it is possible to wait, and my wife was also a virgin, and It is nice that we have no baggage from past relationships. I don't mean to sound preachy, but i was a youth pastor for 6 yrs, so i have seen many times the damage that can come from the decision you are trying to make. Please don't make the decision lightly. Of course I can't answer the birth control pill question....lol...My wife made me get a snip job after we had our last child...lol

Bear in mind that the Nuva Ring, Depo shots, the patch all contain hormones very similar to those in the pill, and can affect your IBD. For some people it's a problem, for others not. IUD's are reserved for women who have had children, at least in the US, because they can cause infertility.

If you are with someone you love and he loves you and the two of you are committed to each other, don't let anyone make you feel bad about your decision! I think the pill is a very responsible choice but everyone reacts differently to it. I am currently off of it because of heart palpitations, nothing to do with crohns. I will say that being with someone as an adult and not having to sneak around is a lot more pleasurable than those times in high school. But I won't lie, those were fun too.

I personally don't like taking the pill. My hormones are so out of whack from years of taking the pill. After using Yaz for years, my skin is awful now. I am back on different pills but they don't help my skin like they did before the Yaz. I think it has something to do with the fact that Yaz is a powerful anti-androgen. The progestin in Yaz is also very new and can have bad side effects. I am thankful to be off it but everyone has different experiences. My sex drive is also low from the pill. Before I was on the pill I was a much more sexual person, TMI probably. Given the opportunity to turn back time, I would not have used the pill so much.

I understand wanting to use a backup method but always use condoms. Can you talk to the gyn about a diaphram? I wouldn't screw up my hormonal balance with the pill if I didn't absolutely need to. If I could go back, I would have not taken the pill and I would have waited to have sex.

The pill does not bother my UC, I take lo estrin. Please do go to a health professional & ask about your options. Please also use a condom to protect against STDs.

I do not want to preach to you about what you should or shouldn't do, but I will offer you something to think about. Sex is awkward/embarrassing (and some times painful) the first time. Make sure the person you are choosing to be with is someone that you can be awkward with and who would care enough about you to stop if you are are in pain. My mother told me as a teenager that if I was too embarrassed to buy condoms or a pregnancy test, I was definitely not mature enough to accept all the responsibilities of being sexually active. She then said that if I was not embarrassed, my second consideration should be, was I mature enough to be honest with she and my dad about my actions and let them help me think through my decision. I actually think that is a pretty good litmus test for the decision. I know this is a big step and I hope you consider it carefully.
