I have been in remission for about
a year now but I still have urgency anxiety. I find myself not doing things that I would like to do because I think what if I have an urgency while standing in line or something. I will only travel with very close friends and my husband & children. If I travel with friends, I want to do the driving. I haven't had an urgency in long time but I still have the inner fear of having one. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to handle the urgency anxiety?

do you have urgency before you have bms at home?
I've never had that type of anxiety, however, but I guess the only thing you can do is practice Kegel exercises to strengthen the sphincter and as soon as you feel anxiety to start them...
The reason would be that it would be a cognitive behaviour
rather than an anxiety one.

no , I have normal BM's every morning. I used to have urgencies about
a year ago but I have been in remission since then. Now I don't have urgencies, but I can't get the fear out of my head that I might have one. Especially when traveling, I look constantly for places that I can run to if needed. I rarely need to stop because of an urgency but I can't get the fear of "what if it hits" out of my system. If my stomach even makes a slight sound, I go into a panic. I can travel alone & things don't bother me but I am only comfortable with only a couple close friends & my family when I travel in a car. don't even think about
airplane travel. the thoughts of that makes me sick to my stomach.

Honestly, it sounds to me like you should seek counseling and possibly consider an anti-anxiety medication...as you describe it, the anxiety is controlling your life, and that's just not healthy. ((hugs)) and hope you find some relief from the anxiety soon.

I have that anxiety when flaring, but after a couple of weeks of no urgency it disappears.

You can ask your present doctor for an anti-anxiety medicaton if you don't want to add another doctor to your list. I carry Xanax as needed because I didn't want to always be "on" something. I pop one or two before doing certain things. There are better medication than that though. Just ask you doctor.

Anti-anxiety meds, coupled with therapy, are necessary tools in dealing with stress in my life, which in turn, affects my colitis. Best of luck to you.

I have the exact same problem and I HATE it. It makes me dread traveling for work. As soon as I get nervous I feel like I have to go to the bathroom too. I take .25 of xanax in those situations.
