I am a 45 year old, healthy male. In May of 2008 I experienced symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis (bloody diarrhea and soft stool, mucus, abdominal cramping). After two weeks, the abdominal pains subsided, but the other symptoms continued on a daily basis for the next three months. In August of 2008, I had a colonoscopy procedure from a gastrointestinal specialist doctor. The results were "segmental discontinuous ulceration, friability, erythema and abnormal vascularity with contact bleeding in the sigmoid colon and rectum." The diagnosis was a mild form of Ulcerative Colitis. The doctor rated it a 2 or 3 on a scale of 1-10. The doctor prescribed Lialda.
I was not happy with the prospect of having to take a drug for the rest of my life. Prior to getting my prescription filled, I spoke with a pharmacist friend of mine, who mentioned probiotics as a possible option. I decided to try the probiotics for two weeks. If that didn't work, I would begin taking the drug.
I purchased a triple-strain formula multidophilus. One billion organisms of each of L. Acidophilus, B. Bifidum, and L. Bulgaricus. The brand I happened to use was by Solaray, in case that matters to anyone. For the next two weeks I took one capsule with breakfast and one with dinner.
By the end of the fourteen day period, all of my Ulcerative Colitis symptoms were gone. No more bloody diarrhea or mucus. I was able to fart with confidence for the first time in over three months.
It has now been over a year since I began taking the probiotics and I have not had a single day of any of the Ulcerative Colitis symptoms. Continue to take a multidophilus capsule each morning and evening. Happily, I never needed to have that prescription for Lialda filled.
I don't know if multidophilus is the answer for anyone else. I only know that it helped me. I decided to write of my experience here in case others find it beneficial.
