I have done away with beer in general just because I was told It causes issues with UC, I seem to have been doing fine since my last flare, I missed a day or two of my rowasa enema, but still was taking asacol, I drank about
6 beers during the saints game last sunday, past three days I've had a bit of blood when i wipe, I wonder if its gonna get worse like last time, I waited way too long to get on steroids last time, and ended up having to take 80 mg a day just to get it under control, and that was horrible as many of you know what they do. I really don't want to take them, but don't want to wait too long either, still waiting on my GI nurse to call me back with a reply to a message I left this morning. any insight will be welcome!!!!

I hope your GI nurse calls you back!
I'd ask to try steroid enemas before going to pred.
And have you tried probiotics?
I'm not sure if it was the beer or the missing the rowasa.... could have been that the combination of both was too much for your gut if you had some inflammation in there that had been kept at bay.
But - don't beat yourself up, just see where you can go from here.
I haven't given up my wine, but I do drink less of it - maybe one or two glasses on those occasions when I do have some. Maybe you don't need to give up beer completely, but have a few less and it wouldn't bother you?

Are you back on enemas nightly? Also, the maximum recommended doseage of Asacol is 12 (although I've heard of people taking more than that). It could be that the combination of missing some enemas plus irritation from so much beer is to blame. I drink with no problems, but never have more than one hard drink (margarita) or one or two beers/glasses of wine.

Alcohol is problematic for many UC sufferers. Ideally, if you're going to indulge, you should limit the quantity. Drinking six in one evening could certainly cause issues.

See my recent posting about
yeast. It may not apply here, but if you had a yeast problem, beer is full of yeast and could definitely irritate things.

Hi...the Rowasa enemas are either 2g or 4g....are you meaning suppositories which are 1g?
How long were you on the rectal meds nightly and were you really taking them nightly and missed only one night?
You're flaring if you're on nightly meds....so, things are still fragile and yes, if you've consumed a large amount of alcohol, it could have encouraged your whole body to react, hence the increased aspect of your flare. It probably would have happened even if you were on the nightly meds and didn't miss any.
Are you taking the oral meds consistently? 2x or 3x daily? It's easy to miss dosages.
You have polyps....they could also bleed...another aspect you need to consider...probably not a good idea to be drinking.
I personally don't think you need to go higher with the Asacol at this point...did you have diarrhea or just blood?
Hope you feel better soon,

the rowasa is 4g. but the doc prescript
ion says 1g nightly. so I really only get about
three squirts out of each bottle. I try and measure it accurately.....kinda hard to do. but it was at bay, and I still take the oral meds twice a day. I missed a few days, and I do take probiotics, in addition I drink one dan active each morning. those seem to help a ton! I think it was the beer......so I'm gonna say goodbye to my old friend, I stopped drinking it for a while.....seems to make a difference. the part that aggravates me is that the doc has no dietary advice at all for me. just says "go to healing well" LOL. I seem to get more info from fellow UC sufferers than I do from her. she is good about
calling back etc though. thanks guys.

Did your doc give any reason for you to only use 1g? I'd call and ask about
that...perhaps it was a mistake on her part when she wrote the script
.

Wow, talk about
conservative dosaging! never heard of just a few squirts, maybe she thought she was dosaging you for a steroid foam and not Rowasa?
You should be using the whole one or at the very, very least....a half.
If that's the fact, then you could be prescribed the 2g dosage and use the whole thing...especially since you have U. proctosigmoiditis....severe.
You should call the doctor regarding that dosage...regardless and get that straightened out, because your butt isn't getting enough meds.
I agree that curbing large consumption of booze is a good idea anyway.
Please let us know what the doc says.

Alcohol makes flares worse, for sure, but I do not find any problems when drinking while in remission. I had quite a, how should I put it, "intoxicating" spring/summer break and never had any problems. It's when I stopped drinking and started to lift heavy weights for months did my flare rear its ugly head.
