Mono

Hi...nice to have a diagnosis, sucks that it's mono.

I'm wondering if the exact cause of your son's mono should be specified.
If his is the Epstein-Barr virus, then maybe L-Lysine is something he should consider. It has huge success with herpes related illnesses. I use it for my cat and my husband uses it when he gets a cold sore and I use it when I'm fighting or trying to prevent a cold or when I'm run down.

Do a search on milk thistle to possibly help the integrity of his liver.

I've also started to use Beta Glucan (kim123's suggestion). I use Sisu brand called Healthmune.

Keep us posted as to how he's doing.

I had Mono at 17 so I can feel his pain! Ugh! Horrible....I hope he feels better soon and remind him to TAKE IT EASY so he doesn't injure his spleen.

I've had mono. You sleep all night, eat a good breakfast and before you can finish getting ready for work you're already exhausted. It caused a flared for me so I got the syptoms of the flare confused with mono; I didn't realize I had mono until much later than someone without UC might have suspected it. I was hosptialized for a week, recovered and felt much better. But there was about 2 month's worth of exhaustion I delt with. I hope your son gets better quickly and it's great you know what's wrong.

I had a horrible case of mono while I was a sophomore in high school. I was on 6-mp and because it's a immune suppressor I got hit even harder by it because my defenses were down. I was hospitalized for a week, had such horrible headaches that I was on oxy (because it was the only thing that worked) and missed 30 days of school.
All I can say is get off the 6-mp until he's feeling better and drink lots of water and dont move a muscle unless you have to!

You're absolutely welcome! It was a mess and if I can spare you, I'm more than willing! :) All I remember is sitting in the hospital and the infectious disease doctor coming in and going "WHAT IS SHE DOING ON AN IMMUNE SUPPRESSANT!?" And then in all clicked. I couldn't fight the infection without a strong immune system.
I had gone into remission just a month before I got mono and even after all I went through I got over mono and was still in remission.

I don't think it necessarily made me more susceptible to it just harder for me to get over the infection.

I am sure everyone reacts differently. He just told me he feels a little better today, so he is going to continue vitamins and lots of vitamin C. He ate more last night than in the past week, so maybe he won't get completely knocked out. thanks again for all of the posts:)

Merry Christmas! Jack is not doing great, but he is not doing any worse either. He is not taking Tylenol anymore, and his fever is in the 100 range. Thanks for all of the posts, and hopefully, he will get better every day:)

I got it in February and I don't think I was really back to normal until April.

Way too early for him to be out and about! I remember I didn't feel up to much of anything for 2 weeks at least. I barely had enough energy to get to the bathroom let alone get dressed. Mono is so rough and it just zaps alllllll the energy out of you. Also, this might be a possibility, Mono can become dormant even after he starts to feel better. There are times, even after 23 years, that I lose all my energy and feel as if I am going to pass out from just moving from the chair to a couch (it takes THAT much energy out of me). But it's random and it never lasts long. The energy drain from mono is much different then the energy drain from having a chronic illness (at least for me it is).

Definately call the GI. I can not say one way or another that 6mp may be affecting him and the mono. When I was 17 I didn't have Uc nor was on immune suppressing medication.

Well, Jackson has his appetite back, and I think that is a good sign he is getting better. He ate a decent dinner last night, and then after we had gone to bed, made himself chicken nachos!!! I was very happy to see that mess in the sink when I got up this morning. Does anyone who had mono remember if being hungry meant you were feeling better???
