Anything help to stop the beginning of a flare?

I'm starting to flare again after being off Pred for a little while. Anybody have any tricks that might help stop or minimize it? shakehead

Micky, where is your UC located? Have you tried rectal enemas yet? That is a good way to get the flare from the bottom up, and the pred will help from the top down....treat both ends as the saying goes around here!

What kind of meds have you been on post pred?  You might want to see about having your maintenance meds adjusted or changed to get you back under control.

i would like to know the answer to this question as well!!!!!!!!

then i would never get into a full blown flare!

rectal meds and continuing nightly until one is feeling normal...meaning not flare symptoms. Continue for another few days to a week nightly then go to every second night......same process to every third night.

The trick is to taper to and remain on a maintenance dosage of either twice weekly or once weekly.

rectal meds....

The come in a 5ASA or steroid. Liquid or foam. Suppositories.

I'm on Lialda. I did pick up some probiotics too. I have some leftover Canasa from a couple of years ago. Do you think I should give that a try again? It was super expensive but I have never tried it along with the Lialda. Thanks everyone. I just don't want to be super sick AGAIN. I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Proctitis. I don't understand how having it contained to the lower portion like that, I still get SO incredibly sick.

You can do the canasa along with the Lialda, no problem there.... as far is the medicine being past expiration date, my memory is that is just might not be quite as effective - but I know there was a thread about this some months back, if you could come up with the right phrase to search for it.....

The fact that you are being proactive may well help you from getting "super sick" - great you are looking into things and taking action! :-)

Yes, and the point of being proactive is to be one step ahead.

One can be extremely sick with just rectal disease.....it has its own set of problems.

You need to change your perspective on why you're sick and start using the meds you should have been on since you were prescribed them.

We don't suggest rectal meds because we enjoy sticking things up our bums. They serve a purpose.

Try Metamucil if your body can tolerate it. I was spiraling this summer and it made all the difference in the world. I also made it through the holidays without a flare - which I haven't done in a good 5 years!

Start with a small dose and work your way up to a full dose, give it 2 weeks and see how you feel. Good luck!

Sorry if this sounds dumb, but how does Metamucil help?

I had stopped the Canasa because that wasn't helping - and the doctor started me on oral meds alone instead. I haven't tried them both together, but since I have some Canasa, I thought it might be worth a shot to try them together and see if it's helpful.

However, some people, like me find that the extra fiber from supplements makes things worse.

Have you asked your doc about upping your lialda, too?

Fiber didn't help or hurt me, really...I didn't poop any more or less, and it didn't form it. It just made the poops bigger each time.

smile Try isogenix, it looks commercial (and is ) but it works for me I have been in remission for two months with normal stools and a lot less lethargic.

Tried steroids once and git shingles as it played havoc with my imune system, high dosage of fish oil - some help but constantly on the toilet

Please don't self medicate on prescription drugs . . . talk to your doctor and see what he/she suggests.

Metamucil bulks up the stools and will also help to absorb liquid in the intestines. Give it a try - if your body can tolerate it, it might help. Also, be sure to start with a small dose and work your way up. :)
