I am getting ready to leave for my flex sig. The doctor asked me if I wanted it with or without sedation. I have always had the sedation but was wondering if anybody has ever had it done without. Is it very bad? Anesthesia always ruins my day so I thought it might be worth it to try no sedation. I am feeling terrible sick as it is from the Imuran.

Every single flex sig (I've had about
15 of them) I've had was with no sedation. It was mildly uncomfortable but for the most part it wasn't that bad.

Same here.....never had the option of being sedated. However, I would go for the sedation. Sometimes, especially while flaring, flex sigs can be painful.

I'd need the sedation too....some don't have a problem with it, but the last time I was really ulcerated so I'm sure that was the problem.

I have had countless flex sigs and have also never been offered sedation. They're a bit uncomfortable but don't last too long, so even if I had the option I wouldn't take it as it would mean I would have to be at the hospital longer, and I prefer to get it over with and get out as quickly as I can!

Back from flex sig. Opted for sedation again because of the severe flaring and I have just been so sick. The nurses stuck me three times and couldn't find a vein. The third try they blew a vein and I fainted. Woke up laid out in chair with oxygen mask, monitors, cold compresses and something going into the IV to get the heart and pressure going. Pressure was a mere 45. Very scary. I thought I was going to die on that one. Unbeleivable.
Test showed active colitis still with no improvement even after four Remicade infusions. I have been getting sicker every day with nausea and vomiting from the Imuran. Severe stomach pains from it. Refuse to take another pill. Have been on them for a month. Started Entecort yesterday and they are filing the appeal for Humira.
What a terrible day.

Sorry to hear so many bad things goingon with you now.
Why are you taking the vitamin C and D in addition to the multivitamen?

My rheumatologist ran blood work on me. My vitamin D number was extremely low. I need to take 2000 IU now to get the count up. Take a little extra C to stay healthy from colds.

OMG....how freaking unbelievable and scary to hear of what happened to you.. Must have scared the hell out of the medical staff and doc as well! What med did they give you for sedation? maybe that's one you shouldn't have again....ever!
I sure hope you're able to get the Humira soon.
This has been a horrific flare with little to no improvement. Please let us know how you're doing tomorrow . Hope you were able to rest this evening and sleep OK.

This all happened BEFORE the procedure. They were trying to just get the IV started in the prep/holding area. I was stuck a total of three times in the back of my hands. On the third they blew the vein. When I was fainting they were scrambling around and a the anesthesia nurse was trying to get one in my upper arm. They shot something called Glyco in to bring the heart and pressure back up. It was scary. I kept thinking I was going to die from an IV and my husband was sitting in the waiting room. After I recovered from that I went into the procedure. No problems from that luckily. I feel a lot better today since I stopped the Imuran and didn't have any yesterday. I was extremely ill from it. When I first started the Imuran I didn't have any problems. Gradually every day I got sicker until I started throwing up with extreme stomach pains. I was really hoping that would have been the answer for me. He said maybe down the road we will start it up at a very low dose and go up very slowly.

OH wow, Boxermom, I feel so bad for you! That is a horrible ordeal to go through. Guess you won't want to be sedated before a sigmoidoscope again. Don't you sometimes wonder about
the training of these so called "professionals"? When I was hospitalized in May of 08, three different lab techs came in to take my blood before I blew my stack and demanded they send someone in who knew what they were doing. Enough was enough already. I know what you mean by blowing the vein. I worked as a lab tech for years and believe me, I would just stick the patient once. If the veins were that bad, I would tell the nurse that the doctor would have to do a "cut down" procedure on the patient. That only happened twice in all my years working (20). I just couldn't see sticking the poor soul so often.
Talking about
scary....during my very first colonoscopy performed while I was hospitalized in 98, I had a severe reaction to the Demerol. The top of my head felt like it was going to blow right off. I remember saying..."my head, my head". Here, my blood pressure had soared to 210/110! I never saw doctors move so fast in my life. Must have been how fast they were working around you..lol. They took the IV out of one vein, placed another IV in another vein and then I vomited. They aborted the procedure, never even started it I should say, rolled my stretcher into the hallway and there I lay...all day, from 9 a.m till they took me back to my room at 3 p.m. My roommate thought they let me go home..lol. Oy vey! Needless to say, the doctors made sure they never gave me Demerol again.

So sorry to hear about
your experiences!
I think a couple of sticks and I would have said "never mind" to the sedation AND to the flex sig!
I think we all need to be assertive and not consent to every test the doctors want, if they are not really going to get new information. At least talk it through with them, be sure. Those scopes are so harsh.

Boxermom...maybe you should reconsider to go back on the imuran and consider something else like Remi or 6MP?
OMG...sounds even worse with your latest explanation of the situation.
It's good you're feeling better today.

I have had five Remicade infusions. The scope shows no healing since the last one. The Remicade is not working so we are going to the Humira. I will never put another Imuran pill in my mouth. I would rather go to the bathroom 500x a day than be that sick from those pills. Even the Zofran for nausea didn't help. Hoping the Entocort and Humira are the answer. I can't believe there was no change at all with the Remi treatments. All that money down the toilet literally.

I'm eager to know if coverage for Humira gets approved.
Have you tried prednisone? For 20 years it helped me get out of tough flares, and I didn't get any long-term health problems from using it. It can be a miracle drug...

Boxermom....yes, I clearly didn't check your original post again before making the other suggestions. Sorry about
that.
If the Humira doesn't work, maybe cyclosprine is an option down the road. burnabygirl is on it at this time....something for you to possibly research and maybe discuss with the doc.

Boxermom....I see you were on 100 mgm of the Imuran. Before Remicade my doctor had me on 100 mgm of the 6MP for awhile...ugh....was I ever SICK!!! It also lowered my white count down to 1.6 (normal being 3.5 - 10.0) Good thing I never caught a bug, I wouldn't have any antibodies to fight it off. He took me off the 6MP completely before starting Remicade. So far, so good with the Remicade, although I did have either an adverse effect or caught some virus two days after my third infusion on Dec. 31st. I feel much better now though. Geez, I hope Humira works for you.

Sorry to hear about
your awful experience Boxermom. Sometimes we are darned if we do and darned if we don't. I hope they can get some meds to work for you and don't ever give you that sedation again. It is so frustrating, isn't it? I am having a flexible sig next friday (the nurse recommended sedation and I agreed.) I was tempted to not get it. I had an endometrial biopsy this year and they tried to do that without sedation. I had to get them to stop that!! Whew, was that painful.. They said it would be painful too, so I guess I am going to take my nurse practitioner's advice about
the sedation. Good luck to you with the meds.
