New To UC, Need Info

I'm 21 Years old and the hospitals and doctors told me I have UC. They put me on asacol first, then lialda, and some steriods. I've been taking them regualry like I'm suppose to, but my stomach for month still feels unsettled. It's like there's never a calm moment with my stomach.

Another thing. How does UC go with drinking alcohol?

We have a lot of posts regarding alcohol and Uc. Some people can drink with no problems and others can't. Research our older posts by using the search function above. I personally have some issues with drinking. I am not a big drinker anyway but I used to be. Now if I drink I get a lot of D the next day.

As for the unsettled "stomach" feeling it's probably your intestines spasming. You can ask your doc for an anti-spasmodic such as Bentyl. Also too, do you know what the extent of your Uc is?

I've only had one test. So far they said it's moderate. But also my colon was so flaired up they couldn't go up all the way to find out if it's chrons or not.

Hello and welcome to the forum! Since you're new to IBD, you might want to have a look at ccfa.org-- the Website of the Crohns and Colitis Foundation of America. They post a lot of info. for patients in your age group. Another helpful site for more detailed info. about our ailment is the Patient Newsletter (Archive) on the Salix Pharmaceuticals Website. Starting in 2003 & ongoing they have posted articles by the top gastroenterologists in the U.S. who treat/research Crohns and ulcerative colitis, dealing with diet, meds, travel, lifestyle, etc. Has your doctor given you any dietary guidelines? Many of us do better on a low-residue diet when flaring-- so that might help you to feel "more settled", too. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

The Doctor had me on low-residue when UC first hit me. I came back to him maybe two weeks later and he took me off the diet and told me to live a normal life. So does UC develop into Chrons or is it either one or the other.

Also, how does lialdia fair agianst the other medications?

It's usually one or the other but there is a condition called Crohn's colitis which is Crohn's but it's limited to the large intestine.

Lialda is a good medication as long as it works for you. There is no right nor wrong med, it's trial and error and sometimes you just have to find the right combination of meds that are going to work for you.
