Multi-Vitamins and Sulfa Drugs

I take sulfasalazine daily which does not work well with most multi-vitamins. It seems any vitamin with PABA cannot be taken with my meds. Can anyone suggest a good multi-vitamin that they have not had a problem while taking sulfa drugs?

Yea, there'll be warnings on the back of the vitamin that says: Do not take with Sulfa drugs. I looked....after feeling the effects!

jocobe...what were the effects you felt?

The reason for not mixing the two is that PABA reduces the effectiveness of the sulfa. In sulfasalazine, it's really the vehicle to get the 5ASA to the colon...but still best to not mix the two.



If one was taking them for antibiotic use for infection, it might not work so well.

I use Sisu Multi-Vi-Min (since 1986) One a day sometimes two if I've got a cold.


I see it has paba in it as well, but I took them when I used a sulfa drug (Septra) for sinus infections and no problems.

Can you not use other 5ASA meds such as Asacol or Pentasa or Lialda or maybe the new one Apriso?

You can still add the rectal meds....do realise that UC starts at the rectum.

More a help I would think.
