Hello everyone. I have a question? I have been in remission for a while now, and all id going good, UC wise. I had a little bit of a cold, and when

I get colds, they go away fast. This one is hanging around and seems to not want to go away. I take otc cough medicine when I get congestion

in my chest and coughing, but this time it seems worse. It's been here for about 2 weeks now, and sometimes I get coughing where it lasts for

about 45seconds to a minute stright, and some weezing. Also, when I lay down on my back the weezing is worse. I was told that some of us

with UC can devolope asthma, and was just wondering if this is possible? Today I bought an otc inhaleler and it seemd to help so far. Any ideas

or opinions? My youngest son(6) has had asthma since he was 2 but I don't know anyone else that has asthma.

The only way to know for sure if this is asthma is to see the doctor for some testing. It could be a chest virus that you've contracted. I had that last year and it just had to run it's course but the doctor did give me an inhaler to get over the hump of it.

It could be asthma, but more likely it's bronchitis. Please do see a doctor to get a diagnosis.

I actually developed asthma following a cold about ten years ago. It resolved after about 8 months, only to reappear just a couple of months ago for no known reason.

Whether you have bronchitis or asthma, prescriptions will probably work better than OTC meds.

 I have had asthma forever and what you describe sounds more like bronchitis which can happen after a cold. You need to see your doctor for stronger decongestants and antibiotics if it is the bacterial strain.

Thanks. It did start after my cold, I think you might be right mom. I didn't think about that. I was producing a lot of phlem, then it seemed to clear up for a couple days, then it came back, and the phlem feels like it's lower and deeper, if that makes any sense.

I hope you're not using the OTC reliever often!

You should go to the doctor ASAP....you could have asthma triggered by this cold. Many have intrinsic asthma.

Yes, could also be bronchitis, but it as well could trigger asthma. You have to deal with an underlying cause initially (cold/infection/inflammation) before it can be determined if it is indeed asthma.

I hope you are NOT using anything with dextromethorphan. That will make your symptoms WORSE, or using one with an antihistamine in it...again...worsen your symptoms .

If you do use a cough med, use only an expectorant and Sudafed PE, or the combo of the expectorant (guaifenesin) or if you're in the US, use Mucinex.

Please go to the doctor.

Two people I work with have had a very similar situation this winter and it's taken a long time to clear up. The doc can help.... hang in there!

I have asthma, not sure if I have UC yet. But if you start weezing again don't lay down! It'll make it worse and you could pass out! Put your hands on your head and try to walk around. Laying down squishes your lungs or doesn't allow them to fill with air, something like that anyway.
