Flagyl vs. Vancomycin for C-Diff - Anyone taken either one of these?

my doctor had me on FLAGYL for a week for C-Diff and my symptoms were not improving so he switched me to Vancomycin. 

has anyone had success with either of these drugs or experience with these drugs that they can share?  i read that temporary to permanent hearing loss can be caused by Vancoycin and that has freaked me out!!  now i rather just stay on Flagyl but worried that it isn't strong enough to treat the C-Diff.  i am trying to trust my doctor but would love to hear from anyone with experience taking these drugs.  thank you!

I was put on Flagyl and then on Vancomycin also for C-Diff. I have been on Vancomycin twice now and found that it was very effective in taking care of the C-Diff. What I have learned is that you need to take a probiotic daily. This will help you long term in controlling the C-Diff. You should take it at a different time then the Vancomycin. Search the forum and you will find many people commenting on the health benefits of probiotics. Good Luck and welcome to the forum.

I think that is the normal course of treatment for c diff. They try Flagyl and if it doesn't help significantly, they move on to Vancomycin. I wouldn't stress, it should help. I've never heard anything about hearing loss. Goodluck to you!

I was misdiagnosed CDIFF -- then correctly diagnosed two months later - pancolitis. Flagyl was a nightmare. I just wasn't getting better - because I didn't have CDIFF. Couldn't balance, foggy, nauseus. Vanco is supposedly more effective, and fewer side effects than flagyl.

You should also get on Floristor while getting rid of C. diff and stay on it for a few weeks after.

You can order it from Drugstore.com and it is really reasonanble.

You should take it twice a day. I firmly believe that it helped my daughter when she had c.diff and they have

done a lot of research about using it with c.diff infection.

Flagyl didn't help my C.Diff at all (and had some yucky side effects for me such as nausea, etc). Within 2 does of the Vanco, I was on the mend.

Hello! I've been reading about MANY of the posts about C-diff.  I have been battling this SUPERBUG for two months now. I first was given Metronidazle 500 mg three times a day back in december.  I took it for a week and it hurt my stomach so bad i stopped taking it.  Three days later my symptoms got so bad I went back on it.  Since then, I've been battling the c-diff horribly.. I got it from taking Amoxcillin. I went to a Gastro doc.. and I had a colonoscopy last monday and he then put me on Vancomycin 250 mg four times a day.  I started taking it tuesday night, and so far HAVEN"T noticed anything yet.  Does anyone know how long it will take for this med to start kicking in?  I'm going to be on this for 6 weeks.  I had stool cultures done also, all THREE came back negative.  That's when he did the colonoscopy and he said I had ulcers all over in my colon and he was 99% sure it was c-diff.  He said the only other thing it could be is a mild case of Crohns.  Anyone have any info on the Vancomycin and how long it should take before it really starts kicking in? I'm currently eating Dannon Activia everyday for my probiotic too.

Since your C-Diff has been going on for so long. it may be considered thhat you have recurrent C-Diff. You should think about contacting your GI Doc about a stool transplant. It is becoming more and more common. Throught the country. Deluth, Minn. Oklahoma. and Medford, Oregon. Good luck

blback, did your gastro take any biopsies when he did your colonoscopies. I would think that the biopsies would be able to differentiate between those ulcers being Crohn's or C.Diff And if he didn't do any biopsies I would say that he was very remiss and I'd be looking for a new gastro!
