HELP!! I have a sigmoidoscopy tommorrow!!

I have a sigmoidoscopy tomorrow and I didn't know what it was so I did some researching online and turns out it hurts like hell!! And I do not do not do not do well with pain and I have horrible anxiety and this is not helping. The paper the doctor sent me in the mail says they're not going to sedate me so what do I do? Can I ask for a sedative? Do they have to give me one? Is it going to hurt? I don't want one..... I need information!

No worries!;) It's really not bad at all!!! I've had tons of them done, and no you don't need a sedative! Takes only just a few minutes and isn't a big deal at all. Just a little uncomfortable, but not too bad! You'll do great! ;) Best of wishes...

I am not going to lie, it's not a "fun" procedure but it's not really painful and terrible. It feels like bad gas pains while they are doing it. The majority of the time, going in and out, it's pretty fast and not comfortable but bearable. The worst part is when they have to turn corners and you feel the gas pains. You will be ok, try not to stress.

I had a sigmoidoscopy not too long ago and it wasn't bad at all... I was cracking jokes and talking with the nurse and doctor and it was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. He made it all the way up to my transverse colon and it wasn't until he got there that I started to feel discomfort. It was a bit gassy, as he inflated my colon with some air, but you just relax and pass it out afterwards... My doctor even said while he was doing my procedure that I could fart if I felt like I needed too, but I was NOT going to do that while he was down there working! LOL...

I did have some gas pains on the way home, but other than that.. it was a breeze :) OH, and all I had to do for prep was 2 fleet enemas.. not bad either... Good luck and let us know how it goes for you!

I had a sigmoidoscopy done in june and I was terrified. I decided to just give it a go. I told them though that if I didn't like it I wanted to be sedated.. they said as long as I had someone to take me home it was alright. Well I got in there.. and not even a minute into it I was like STOOOOP SEDATE ME NOW!!!! lol They sedated me enough that I didn't feel it, but I could still see the tv. Pretty neat actually.

     I've had several sigmoidoscopes throughout the past eleven years, since being diagnosed with UP.  I have to tell you they are not pleasant.  When I'm not flaring they aren't too bad but the past two or three that I have had was while I was flaring and the doctor had to abort the procedures.  Last June my blood pressure skyrocketed up to 210/110, most likely due to the anxiety.

I have had a bunch and they actually don't hurt like hell. I mean, sticking a scope up your rear end is not my ideal thing to do during the day, but it's very tolerable. I have had gas symptoms worse than a sig scope, lol. Only lasts a couple of minutes, and really only one uncomfortable portion of it. If you tense up and don't relax then yes it is going to be worse on you, so you may want to ask for something.

I don't know if it hurts but I don't wanna be there to find out.  I have had three - years ago one without sedation.  Now I always request it.  Doctor gives me same as with colonoscopy but much less and I feel fine after.

So happy I got sedated. They said that I seemed uncomfortable and even gave me more during the procedure.

I was about to ask in which country you life that they do not even offer a sedative! Where I am, it's the first thing they ask about and a must for a colonoscopy!

AlAl, a sigmoidoscopy is not the same as a colonoscopy, because it doesn't got up nearly as far.
