At a CCFA seminar that I attended last year, one of the presentations addressed this issue and cited a study that showed an eighty percent decrease in fertility for women who had j-pouch surgery. Wow. Up until that point I had only heard or read that there was an "increased" chance of infertility. We (my husband, daughter and I) have consulted with two surgeons, simply because we are trying to gather as much information and educate ourselves as much as we can in case it ever gets to the point that my daughter needs surgery. One of the surgeons did say that having a laparoscopic surgery does not seem to decrease fertility as much as traditional surgery........he was speaking anecdotally, however, as he did not have any facts to back this up with (and of course that happened to be the method of surgery he performs!)
And yes, the infertility is due to the scar tissue and adhesions that form internally.........not the lack of a colon.
