I have been taking Asacol for two years now and have been in remission. Since it is not covered under my insurance, I started buying 5 months ago from a Canadian Pharmacy online for 1/3 the cost. They sent me a generic for asacol and I am currently having my first flare since diagnosis. I've done a little research and found that there is no real generic for asacol because of a patent and am wondering if this could be the reason for my flare up. Has anyone else had any experience with "generic" asacol, good or bad?

As I recall, a couple members posted over a yr ago about a generic Asacol made in India. Might that be what you got? There is no approved generic Asacol made in the U.S.-- just generic balsalazide (Colazal) which has made some of us sick, plus sulfasalazine. I need the brandname Colazal to function well; it's outrageously overpriced. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

This one is actually made in Italy. I was told that if I took my prescription for Asacol into an italian pharmacy, this is what I would get. It's called Asamax. I'm fighting the pharmacy right now to cancel my last order and refund me the money because all I can find is that there is no "real" generic and anything under any other name might have different ingredients or different release times. I've been back on the Asacol for 6 days now and am seeing some improvement so I'm pretty sure that this is what caused it.

It's possible the patent could only offer protection in the US, and that's why one can find generic Asacol outside the US.

I used generic Asacol from India called Mesacol for quite a while. It seemed to work as well as regular Asacol -- and was a lot cheaper.

I use Mesacol from Canada and it seems to work as well for me also Rio. Does anyone know if Sulfasalazine is any cheaper? I hear its the same as Asacol but contains sulfa.

I think there is also a generic asacol made in the UK.....and it is true that patents reach there conclusion at different times in different countries.

Canada does produce a 400mg generic asacol domestically but generics from other countries are sold by Canadian pharmacies at least on the web. Very confusing.
