What is in Remicade?

     My GI doctor told me it was made from something from a cow but today we bumped into a woman whom my husband knew from the university where he used to work and she is a rheumatologist.  She has lots of patients on Remicade and said it is made from something from a mouse...hmmm....no wonder my daughter's cat is following me around.

It's a genetically engineered drug, but it is grown in mouse cells. It may contain traces of mouse protein, and these are felt to be the particles that may stimulate the development of allergic reactions to the drug.

One of the nurses at the infusion center told me it had mouse urine in it. I don't know if she was joking with me or not and I'm not sure I want to know.

     OOOOH....mouse protein..ok.  Geez, I could have sworn my GI doctor told me cow protein.  Maybe he thought if he told me mouse protein I would be grossed out and refuse it again..lol.

Inflixmab is an artificial antibody. It was originally developed in mice, as a mouse antibody. Because humans have immune reactions to mouse proteins, it was later developed into a human (humanized) antibody. Because the antibodies were produced from one cell that was grown into a clone of identical cells, it is called a monoclonal antibody. Because it is a combination of mouse and human antibody, it is called a chimeric monoclonal antibody.
