Soooo apparently I have proctitis not Colitis. Which I believe is just less severe as Colitis? Am I right? Even though having these bathroom issues twice a week with a lot of pain and lastly 2-4 hours I do not see as being less severe? I feel like I am afraid to eat anything. I have ruled out almost everything. And I do not want to leave the house! Went for a Sig today and was told that I am not inflamed and not flairing up.

Any suggestions on how to handle Proctitis? sad

Hmm well I was just diagnosed with proctitis about a month ago so I don't have too much too tell you as far as how to handle it. But as to how severe it is, my dietitian showed me a diagram. I think proctitis just means that the lowest part of your colon is affected. Like left-sided colitis is when the whole left side is affected. Pancolitis is when the entired colon is infected. I think that's what it means... I could be wrong. You should probably google it and try to find a diagram lol. But I understand how you feel. I cannot believe for the life of me that the tiny little part of my colon that's affected causes so much pain/trouble. I think all ulcerative colitis kind of equally sucks with the exception of how you're responding to medicine and stuff.

     I, too, have ulcerative proctitis.  I wouldn't say it isn't as severe as colitis because I have really suffered over the last eleven + years.  The doctor has me on Colazal as it treats the rectum better than Asacol.  Thank heavens that, thus far, it hasn't traveled further into the colon because it could happen.

    Over the years my condition has worsened.  I am now on Remicade because I have become prednisone dependent.  My symptoms when flaring, which has been almost constant since May of 08, are: bleeding, urgency, diarrhea.  There is often mucus in the stool and constant pressure.  I did well following my first two infusions of Remicade but suffered a flare following my 3rd.  Waiting to see if I have build up antibodies to Remicade but won't know that until after my 4th infusion on the 26th of Feb.sad

It's still ulcerative colitis, but limited to the rectum.

Treatment is with rectal and oral meds...5ASA to start usually.

Ulcerative Proctitis is still colitis.  Meowmix is right, how each type of colitis is diagnosed is by which part of your large intestine is inflammed.  I was originally diagnosed with proctitis and it progressed to left sided colitis.  (I was told by a locum once that my proctitis was not serious like UC.  I believed her.  What a mistake.)  Any inflammation and bleeding is bad as far as I am concerned.  And the severity of this disease is different for everyone.  I know a woman in my hometown who has been in a flare with proctitis for four years now.  How is that not serious??? 

As for treating proctitis, it is so important to use rectal meds.  I use salofalk suppositories.  Others use enemas.  What works for one, may not work for another.  Oral meds won't necessarily reach the inflammation.

Proctitis is the term used when there is inflammation in the rectom...crohn's patients can also have proctitis since with crohn's it can affect any part of the GI tract from mouth to anus...ulcerative colitis is limited to the colon/rectom...it often includes the rectom (not necessarily always though, just as it often starts in the rectom and moves up into the colon, but that is not written in stone for every UCer either).

Most UCer unless there's rectal sparing....which actually is caused by fatiguing of the response. There will be structural changes from chronic inflammation. it won't be perfect!


pb4's correct in the CD aspect of proctitis, there are forms limited to that area as well....but since this is a UC forum...we're talking UC and UP .
