      Has anyone tried Ensure while flaring?  Did it hurt?

I did once. It really bothered my stomach. May have been the dairy in it... My GI had gave me some to try and keep something down.

It makes me feel nauseated if I drink it too fast. It does have a lot of oil and sugar in it so that's something to consider if those things bother you but, it doesn't seem to effect my UC. Be sure to get the one w/o extra fiber if you're going to try some! :o)

My son with uc likes the chocolate plus protein flavor. I prefer the vanilla plus protein. I react badly to many foods but this doesn't bother me at all. I take a six-pack to work when I am flaring and substitute the drink for solid foods. My son is extremely skinny so getting any calories in him is great. He drinks it all the time not just during flares.

It has a lot of sugar in it, so you can dilute it down with water and make 2 drinks out of 1 bottle -- and that should make it easier to digest as well.

I am trying it right now for the last week or so. I am lactose intolerant and on a gluten free diet. The box said it was lactose and gluten free, but within a minute of drinking some I get sick... so I guess it is not agreeing with me. It tastes good, but there is casein in it which I guess is making me sick.

Give it a try, you might be ok with it.

Yes it took me forever to realize that it was doing more harm than good. It was mostly responsible for giving me bad cramps.

I was given ensure when I was in the hospital. I had malnutrition caused by my UC and found it difficult to eat anything - I think it definitely helped me at the time.

It's not the sugar but the corn syrup solids...garbage for your stomach.

When I can't eat anything all day (like now) I have an ensure drink at lunch time so that I can keep going. I get the chocolate without any extra's (no extra fibre or protein). I don't seem to experience any discomfort at all and it hasn't made me feel worse. They helped me last time I was flaring as well.

I pretty much lived on it for the last 6 months. It has a lot of sugar but otherwise I could tolerate it better than most solids.

I've been using it a lot for two weeks...up three pounds. Last night I bought the Equate version ($6.97 vs. $8.97 at Wal Mart)

Anyone have experience with the off brand?

I have used ensure for years to try to gain weight. It on occasion would affect my UC, and as a pp said, if i drink it to fast, i get sick to my stomach.

After having some serious complications to surgery, my weight dropped very low. I was given a medication called Megace ES to help stimulate my appetite, which i thought was impossible w/ the pain, cramps, nausea, ect from my UC.

It was such a success that i have been able to put on 26lbs!!!! I am not sure why our GI's do not mention this med. to us. Granted, it does come w/ possible complications, like all meds, but if you are not eating and have no energy and it's a last resort, i can say it literally saved my life.
