I did read it, and it does not say that Lialda is better than Asacol.
What the researchers did was take a group of people who'd been treated for about 8 weeks with one of the following:
1. 2.4 g/day MMX mesalamine (Lialda)
2. 4.8 g/day Lialda
3. 2.4 g/day delayed release Asacol (is this the new Asacol HD?)
4. nothing (placebo)
They then selected a group of folks who hadn't achieved remission, and placed all of them on 4.8 g/day of Lialda for another 8 weeks. At the end, 59.5% had achieved remission.
They didn't compare the different forms of mesalamine in this second part.
The point was to see if additional time on high-dose mesalamine resulted in remission or not, since many patients are placed on steroids or other stronger drugs after not getting into remission after 8 weeks on mesalamine. I'm sure they would have found the same results by using Asacol for another eight weeks at 4.8g/day.
