Asacol dosage

  Ok so ive been taking asacol in 800g tabs

  2 tabs twice a day giving me 3200mg a day plus the enima salofalk

  now having just got my new scrip which is labelled 400g tabs

 3 tabs 3 times a day giving me 3600mg

  So does it makes sense to increase the dose?

  does it matter if I take 4 tabs twice a day for convienience?

  I am seeing the GI doc again on monday anyway for a consultation but id like some thoughts before I go.

I take my meds twice a day, so it won't really matter. You could take 5 in the morning and 4 at night.

Some docs prescribe them 3 or 4 times a day, but I believe it's too easy to forget the mid day meds and end up either missing them completely or taking them with the nightly dose.

Whatever the reason for the doc's prescribing them...maybe he normally prescribes the Asacol 3x daily.

Ok that would work, taking anything 3 times a day Im gonna forget one of the times, plus working makes it harder to do the mid day thing.

Hi, I just like to mention to you what my doctor told me. He said it is good to take 3 times a day. The reasons are;
1. Asacol half life time is 6 hours.
2. Less amount of Asacol is better for liver. Too many asacol pill at once can demage one's liver.

I disagree...it would take longer for the Asacol to firstly be dispursed and then once it's dispursed, the half life could be 6 hours. But, if one forgets the pills, what good would that do?

It wouldn't matter regarding the liver if the daily amount was to be divided into 2, 3 or 4....

I split my 12 pills into 4 doses... It seems to maintain the Asacol level perfectly. I take them at breakfast, lunch, dinner and before bed... That way my body is always feeling the benefits of this medication.

Always check with your doctor and she what they advise. We can only give you suggestions on what works for us... we aren't professionals... just average people struggling through this disease.

Ok so heres my update


I saw the GI doc today and I now have to do the following

Take the salofalk enima every other night for another month then stop taking them
Take the same amount of asacol for 1 year then come off them and have another colonoscopy or sigmoid thing to check things out.

He also told me the UC is in th first 30cm of my colon and the biopsys show it hasnt spread.

He also said that there is a 15% chance that it will go away completely? and 85% that it wont.

Now how is this possible to have a 15% chance for it to clear up completely?

The doc is really good and pro active but im not sure about this statement.

All in all I am very happy with my situation to date!

sounds iffy.....but all you can do is try it and go from there.

I wouldnm't put all my eggs in one basket of hope that it'll clear up completely.

Make sure that if you have symptoms again, you start back on the enemas immediately. Also don't forget any of your dosages if you're taking it 3x daily.

Can't see that you should go off the asacol, but if you are going to do so, taper off.

As well, stopping abruptly from every second night might bee too soon after a month.

Again...see where it goes...your butt will tell you soon enough. I tried to get off my meds as well, but it didn't last long. But, I was encouraged to try since I was doing so well.

Life always gets in my way..lol.

Oh yea he also said splitting the tabs into twice a day will work so I won have to remember 3 times daily.

I think what im going to do is take the enimas every night for another 2 weeks then do the every other night thing for the month.

I agree im more of a realist than an optomist so I always excpect the worst ....lol

Im thinking the same that I would rather taper the asacol than go cold turkey so ill probably try this after about 9 months and cut down the pills gradually from there to see how my body deals with it.

Realist is still optimistic I think....I call myself a pessimistic optimist..lol.

Experience is your only teacher...and you have to be one step ahead at least in the lesson.
