Its ironic what you wrote in your last sentence (last post by you on my thread about
suppositories) "
Most of your extreme symptoms will be rectal anyway unless your whole colon is inflamed."
I have really been thinking about this lately. Here is why.
I told the doctor my symptoms have NEVER been diarreah. The flares have all started out the same way. Looser stools..going after anything I eat but not diarea and no blood. Then it progresses to lots of urgency, and many many trips to the john only to expel 1) a bit of gas 2) a bit of stool and blood or 3) just a bit of blood- this could happen up to 50 times a day and at times I even feel constipated as the amt I am actually letting out seems it could not even fill a shot glass !
So tihs is how my flares have been. No massive diarea or blood loss, my hemoglobin or iron have never been low cause I dont lose that much blood..I never get dehydrated from UC etc..
So to recap main symptoms when things get into a full blown flare are:
1) URGENCY- top symptom
2) rectal bleeding more like a period
3) rectal pain and pressure
4) a touch of a nauseated feeling but not any really horrible cramps
5) FREQUENCY- many as 50 trips a day to expel small amounts of anything..
My GI has never been really specific with me and just says I have UNIVERSAL COLITIS which to me means PANCOLITIS. Am I right there?
I have done a lot of research and to me it seems that my symptoms are more typical of something in the lower tract..maybe rectal to the sigmoid?
I think my latest 2 year flare could have been treated differently because of this. I have been on everything but RECTAL meds until I came on this board. Salofalk, Pred, and Humira.
I am thinking about all this in hindsight now..for example..I am hearing that most pple say the initial 40mg of Pred works very fast for them when they are having diareah and what not..well for me it took 1 week to see any difference in the above symptoms.
The only time I have been really in anything like remission while I was on Humira was when it was combined with Pred. Otherwise, still at least 4-6 trips a day, urgent, and with tiny amounts of bleeding.
I am seening another GI for a second opinion in april. I want to kn ow exactly what those reports say from my 2 colonoscopies that were done while I was flaring the last 3 years. My family doctor read me something over the phone along the lines of "sigmoid colon"...which makes me think I am right..but why does he always just say "oh you have universal colitis..yup very bad..very bad" lol seriously thats what he says..
Right now I am on 9 Salofalk a day, supplements as per below, and 1000mg salofalk suppositories one at bedtime. Am I perfect ? no..but something tells me I could have been if I were treated properly.
What do you think? Sorry for the long post but its really been bugging me.
