Subdued, Alzheimers doesn't always progress rapidly and yes they are aware of something not being right about their minds in the beginning. Many people with Alzheimers are the ones to make the initial step to seeing the doctor because they know. That's what makes having Alzheimers so horrible is because they know that something is wrong with their mind and there is nothing they can do about it short of taking meds that slow the progression.
Yes. In the very early stages, people notice their memory being not as good as it once was. It's once they past the earlier stages of dementia, they don't know they have a dementia. Their memory is often disoriented and confused. My step-grandmother had Alzheimer's. She didn't know that anything was wrong with her mind. My boyfriend's uncle's wife also has Alzheimer's. She doesn't realize it either. They will insist in certain things that just aren't true. For example, they will confuses people with other people.
I've been having memory issues for the past 30 years, and the life expectancy from diagnosis to death is three to 20 years. At least, I think I've been having memory issues for the past 30 years...
