Hi,
I think going gluten-free is a good idea. My daughter diagnosed UC in 2008 has gone gluten-free this past Dec. and it seems to be the single most effective thing in turning around her colitis. Now I am looking to get her off the Imuran & Remicade, the two meds she is taking. She is also taking Vit D supplements, iron supplement(Floradix and iron bisglycanate now), VSL # 3 and bifidus, enteromend enzymes, and psyllium. We've learned alot since she was diagnosed over a year ago, and one is that her drs. don't necessarily know what is going on all the time. We are so glad we took her to an integrative dr. who has led her into what we believe true gut-healing. Her last flare was in Oct. 2009 and she has been symptom-free since December.
She is autistic so we totally control what she eats. I guess that makes it easier somewhat for her, otherwise she'd be eating pizza, cookies, bread and crackers all day every day. We've really had to make some dietary changes, but I think it has been worth it. Good luck!!
There is a plethora of info out there on the internet, more than there was 7 years ago when we tried going gluten-free. More quality products to choose from, and mixes that you can buy and make your own.
Smiles,
Pam
