Hi

I was diagnosed in '85, no flares until 12/09 however i too was diagnosed with 'activated protein c resistance like yourself we call it V Leiden.

Well at 27 i had a DVT in my calf, i had to inject fragmin into my stomach daily for 8 weeks then i took Warfarin for 1 year. One year later i had a hysterectomy and again i had injections then Warfarin, however i have never taken any anti clotting when having a tooth out. I had heparin injections Jan this year as i was flaring and had c diff but only fo a few days. Talk to your GI think the dentist is being too over cautious.

My condition means i cannot take the contraceptive pill or HRT and i have been menopausal since '98 it goes on forever lol

So sorry you have the condition all my siblings, parents and children were tested, luckily i got it from my dad and my son has it less problems for guys lucky buggers!

Hello back!

If I just had the Leiden gene like my mom, I wouldn't have to take anti clotting unless something is major. But I also inherited the Prothrobin Gene Mutation G102010( or some such number like that) from my fathers side.

There is only a 1 in 7000 chance of that happening. They work together and double my risk of clots. My sister has only the leiden gene and she's like you.

And yes menopause sucks...I've just started and I get no meds what so ever, plus I am to avoid soy, flax and any other phytoestrogens. I really shouldn't complain, I could not know any of this like my mom and have had a stroke by now.  She lost part of her vision as well as some speech as well. 

I also got my autoimmune problems from her. She has PBC and Mastenia Gravis.  My youngest son said he is not having children because we are geniticly screwed...

Oh and it's the Hematoligist that insisted about when to take the anticlotting...Now I think the dentist is afraid to do anything on me.  The hematoligist told me I was lucky that the tummy tuck I had 3 years prior didn't go bad because of a clot, it was before we knew.

How does one find out if they have these issues?

I only found out after having a DVT plus the fact i was under 30 at the time and it is very unusual to have a DVT so young. Otherwise i would not have known many people live with V Leiden without knowing. My doc said when you hit 40 take a soluable aspirin every day, i take it even though i have UC, rather UC than a blood clot that can or will kill.

Because my mother had a blood clot and they found that she had the gene, the insisted I get tested before I could have hormone replacement. Turns out I can't. If there is a history of blood clots or strokes in your family, ask your doctor for the blood test. It's a simple blood draw.

I had the DVT/PE at 31 right after my initial UC diagnosis and hospitalization. No coincidence in my opinion. I had the PE for over a month before they figured out what it was. I was so young they never connected the dots until I started complaining about the pain in my calf. Looking back, I am so lucky to be alive. I was still exercising, flying frequently for work, trying to live my life the best I could despite the intense pain.

I took all the tests but didn't have any detected genes. But like I mentioned in another thread, I likely have some genetic clotting issue as my grandfather died from PE and my aunt had DVT/PE as well. Additionally, I was extremely coumadin/warfarin resistant, taking 25 mg's a day.

If you think you are potentially may have a clot, please insist it be checked thoroughly. My brother with UC was diagnosed with PE recently - there were "many many" clots in his lungs. His GP (and mine) since we were children actually cried when she found out because he has been through a lot and she said he'd narrowly escaped death (again, it's not the first time for him!) He had been in pain for over a month, had many scans and tests, they said it was asthma , then his heart, then a virus, and then they diagnosed it. It seems they didn't take his UC into consideration and still don't even though it means there's a higher risk. He's on coumudin.

My Grandfather had DVT in his calf heres ago..I did ask my doc about this and she said no need for testing just yet as one person in the family with a clot does not mean there is a gene...especially cause he was over 60.

I am going to see her for something else today and will ask about it again.I didnt realize the risk was that increased cause of having UC.
