OT - I finally have answers for my back pain!

After years of suffering, having tons of bloodwork, xrays, MRI's and CT scans I finally have an answer to all my back pain and boy oh boy what a mess!  I finally broke down and went to a chiropractor, he took 6 xrays and pretty much my whole spine is messed up.  My SI/hips are misaligned (chiro thinks I was born that way), my lower back (lumbar is crooked), my upper back looks like a scoliosis spine - it's curves to the right AND I have OA and bone spurs in there and then my neck instead of having a natural curve is poker straight.  He recommended I have at least 30 visits to try and straighten my spine as much as possible.  Then after that he may be able to help with my carpal tunnel.  Oh and he even helped my bum left shoulder.

I am just so tickled to know that NO all this pain was NOT in my head!  Why couldn't my doctors pick up on this?  I've only been going to see doctors for the past 10 years for this pain geez!

Did you see a Reumy in the past?
Sounds like seronegitive splondeoarpthy (sp), I read somewhere that chiropratic adjustments were not good for the spine under this condition.

Yep, been to a rheumy and a neurologist.

Edited to add: I've even been tested to see if I carry the HBLA-27 gene (I think that's the right combo of letters and numbers! lol) and that was a negative.

Hi...you'll get some relief, but your spine won't be straightened, per se.
You will have relief from spasming and things will get somewhat realigned, but I think you should do more maintenance rather than one goal.

I have slight scoliosis, lordosis, misaligned hips, worstened from lung surgery and injury, osteo as well, but thanfully no aS.

A chiro has given me amazing relief.

I would also suggest massage for relieving the spasming in the muscles that contribute to how your body is shaped and has become from compensation of pain and your injuries, etc.

It'll be a process for sure....


Did you get referred to this chiro from a friend?

When is your first treatment? Will he also be doing some massage, pressure point therapy, tens, accupuncture, etc?

I found this chiro thru ratemds.com and he was rated a 5 - I made a comment about that on that post. But I had my first treatment today and I am a bit sore so I've been icing my back. I am not quite sure what his plan for me is but he did mention that he is going to try to get me out of pain and hey if he can manage that then he is A-OK in my book! lol

I have great bones, but I did have a straight neck from working at the computer all the time. I went to a chiropractor, and now I have a normal curve in my neck again.

wow..all that scares me...the joint pains you describe sound like how I feel. My ana and reumy test came back negative, but I am still going to see a reumy Dr in two weeks. I don't know about having that gene, but just because you don't have it doesn't mean it isn't spondyloarthropathy (thanks Dr A).

I have never in my life had joint pains or back problems till after I was diagnosed with UC and long off pred..

Good luck and let us know how it goes.  I would so much rather be able to treat without any more drugs.

I am sure not all chiropractors are effective, all professions have their share of duds, but I have been going to an excellent chiropractor for years for the degenerative discs in my back. Very effective and the best part is NO MEDS! My back would gradually go out of alignment and I would gradually feel back pain getting more intense. Then I would get an adjustment and remain pain free for 4-6 months until it again goes out of alignment. Then another adjustment.

I wish there were a med free alternative to ulcerative colitis. It would be great to get an adjustment and remain in remission for 4-6 months.

Fairygen, I've had lower back pain all my life even before Uc, got into a car accident 14 years ago and since then things have never been the same. I doubt my back is a mess from a spondyloarthropathy because like I said, I have had soooooo many tests and have been to numerous doctors over the course of 10 years that I find it hard to think that everything and everyone could've missed something like that. And that is my thought line exactly...to not have to treat with drugs! LOL

Thanks everyone, I have heard horror stories about chiro's and success stories and I think the horror stories is the reason I have waited so long to see one. I didn't want anyone messing with my back if they were just going to mess it up even more. But I'm glad to hear that many of you have had success with them.

Being a chiropractor I can tell you with 100% confidence, if you do what they say you will be satisfied (as long as you have a halfway decent doc). Unfortunately for us, people wait until they are in horrible shape to come see us and then expect a miracle on their first visit, lol. I often hear the line "Doc, I have tried everything and had every test you can imagine, so I thought I would give this a shot."

Oh I don't expect miracles especially after one visit! lol I even told him that I don't expect to feel like a million dollars but a hundred dollars would be fine :)
