Question for those who stay at a hotel with someone while in a flare?

I am doing really well right now, but we want to make plans to go to Nola late this spring.  We stay at the Hampton Inn usually, but with mornings being bad for Colits sufferers like the are, how do you handle the one bathroom thing?  I mean our partners may not have Colitis. but they still have to go to the bathroom, so what do you do, if you S.O. is using the toilet and you have that immediate urge?  This is really worrying me, as even when I am doing really well as I am now, my mornings are my touchiest times, and when I have to go, I have to go, and I certainly can't force him off the toilet if he is going.  I may be in and out of the bathroom 4 times in any given hour before 10 AM.

Anyone have any insight?

My hubby is an early riser, and he makes sure he's in and out of the bathroom before my waking time.
Hubby has also snuck in to use the toilet while I'm in the shower..... anything to make it work.

And, the nice thing about many hotels (including Hamptons) is that there's usually at least one bathroom for each gender near the breakfast room, then maybe another near the fitness room or pool.... so at breakfast time I can duck into one handily. Or he can go down the hall to one of these other bathrooms...!

I'm like Songlady's husband. I'm the early riser and I get my bathroom trips over before my husband even cracks an eyelid. But I agree that maybe you can ask your SO to use another bathroom in the mornings?

Hi, this is so funny b/c I'm taking a trip with friends and have been worried about the same thing.

As far as when I'm with my husband...it's no worries, he knows how it is.  He's very accomodating, using other bathrooms if necessary and not taking alot of time in the bathroom if he knows I might need it.  And yes, those bathrooms on the first floor are handy for such times.

When there are no other choices use the lined garbage can. Just knowing its there for an emergency will make the urgency somewhat better.

Yes to everything said above. I learned to get a room near the downstairs public bathroom. My DH is very understanding but I swear my bowel gets crazy the minute he uses the bathroom and there IS NO TIME.

I've gotten much better with urgency but mornings are still devoted to trips to the john. And even non-UC people need their morning john time so one bathroom is really not enough.

Book a room on the first floor and plan your morning route.

When we go to visit our son in Cleveland we stay at a Holiday Inn. We discovered they have a hospitality room on the floor we always stay on - 4th. We request a room on that floor with a fridge for the food I always bring to eat. The hospitality room has a big TV, couches, fridge loaded with pop and a great bathroom. He often uses that bathroom when I am busy in the one in the room.

Y'all might check to see if there is a hospitality room in the hotels you frequent. One more bathroom always makes for an easier visit.

As long as your partner understands your possible urgency it should work out fine.  I usually get up earlier than my husband - never here at home where we have two bathrooms - and get the BM's over before he gets up.  However, he knows I may interrupt his shower, etc.  So far it has worked.  BUT, if we are staying a few days for vacation I try to find a hotel with suites - 2 bathrooms even if we don't need another bed or bedroom.  We are going to Orlando end of April and the hotel/resort I paid a little more a day for a suite with one bedroom and extra 1/2 bath. 

The ideas about bathrooms in lobby, etc. also works - ask for room as near as possible.  My husband has gone there a few times and let me have our bathroom.

My S.O. and I share a one bathroom condo and if I feel there is going to be a competition for the loo, I setup two garbage bags lining a sturdy trash can and use it as my porta potty. When done I throw a lot of paper towels in there, and then seal up the bags and insert them into three or four more individually well sealed bags that are therefore completly free of odor, and throw them out of the unit in the general trash. If I was at a hotel, I'd just thrown that into a dumpster, the same way people dispose of used diapers.

I totally understand your concern. That is why I rarely travel with friends or with people that are not understanding of my condition. My mother and I always have great trips because a)she's a lot of fun and b) she understands that I need my time in the am. Good luck!!!

I stay with my sister in a hotel room at least once a year, and she always asked me before she uses the bathroom if I need to go. So that helped a lot. I also notice that people with healthy digestive systems don't take very long in the bathroom! She is in and out quick, every time. Except when she was doing her makeup and hair, and then she knew to let have it if I said I needed to go!

Just reading all of your posts makes me happy!!  Sometimes I feel like the only person in the world who has to think about things like the closest public restroom, planning for a long car ride, or staying in hotels with friends.

Over the last 9 years, I have spent many a morning in a hotel shouting at friends/relatives to let me in the bathroom...NOW!  smile   And the first thing I do whenever I check into a hotel is locate the lobby bathroom, just in case!

You're not alone! This is a common travel dilemma. It helps to keep a sense of humor when things get urgent. Once in a foreign country, my S.O. went to use the hotel lobby restroom because I had to hole up in our private john. It turned out that the porter was cooping in the lobby restroom, which must have been empty of patrons for a while, then got frantic over the sudden guest entrance, & started sweeping/mopping with EXTREME diligence. Not exactly conducive to a productive session on the pot for someone w/o IBD ... lol. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

If you don't get a room on the same floor as the reception or breakfast area (where they would have additional toilets) you could also try for a room on the same floor as the gym, as that should have it's own bathroom too.
