Any Siblings or Family Members Have UC as Well?

I was just curious if anyone else in your family has been hit with this disease as well? I know my sister had it severely that it required surgery but we tried to trace our family back as far as we could to see if anyone else had it and there was no one...just my sister and I got stuck with it and we were both roughly diagnosed in the same age range of our late 20's.

My mother didn't have Uc but she did have Crohn's. My great grandmother had some intestinal issues but at that time they didn't have a name for it. My gma was telling how she remembered her mother always running to the outhouse and would eat soft foods. None of my brothers have this though.

My father developed UC in his forties and I around 50. Fortunately I've not suffered as long as you have. I sure hoping to avoid Prednisone. Like dear old Dad, TB skin tests are positive for TB but lungs are always clear. Nonetheless, it would appear I'm not a good candidate for Remicade because of this and living in the Ohio River Valley where there are a lot of mold spores. Best wishes with your treatments!

On my mom's side one of my aunts has UC, she's had it for years but hers has gotten better with age she says.  She thinks after she went through menopause it got better for her because of horomones. Also my grandpa (mom's dad) had it.  But so far, I'm the only one in my generation with it.  Lucky me.rolleyes

I have to say my sister was one of the biggest supports for me as she went through her Colitis a few years before me so she was able to help me step by step on what to expect. The first day I saw blood and told her, her words to me were "looks like you have what I had". That pretty much scared the crap out of me after seeing how severe her UC was.

Not for me, though my best friend has it too and her dad's side of the family has a history of rectal bleeding and colon cancer.

I have two cousins with Crohns, my mum has some problems and I believe my great-aunty had colitis too. Now my own aunty is going through tests as she has suspected colitis. Definitely seems to run on my mum's side of the family :(

On Ma's side, 1st Cousin has Colitis, and another case with a now deceased Grandmother who initially was told she had Colitis then got DX as having Celiac D.
More random history on Father's side with Auto-Immune Disorders (MS, Arthritis..). Guess that explains things?

     Paternal grandmother died from rectal cancer, not sure if she had IBD because that was back in 52.  Dad had diverticulitis and had to have an operation.  Both my parents had hemmie operations in the 50's.  I am an only child.  Dad was an only child.  My one aunt and two uncles, mother's siblings, no IBD.  No first cousins with IBD either.  So far, keeping fingers crossed, both my daughters are ok as are my two grandchildren.

No one in my family has had any autoimmune disease. My mother had IBS, probably because she had massive adhesions from a ruptured appendix when she was 8. But no IBD.

I'm the lucky recipient of all the weird genes, I guess.

No one in my family who are blood relatives: grandparents, parents, siblings, uncles, aunts, cousins, ... has any digestive or autoimmune issues. I'm the only one. I had to have gotten mine from antibiotics. I started taking them for acne and kept on taking them when I got skin inflammations/infections. I've also had pneumonia, sinus infections, ear infections, bladder infections, ... My mom had severe acne when she was young. It went away when she started taking the pill. I would have taken the pill, but my mom got blood clots in her legs from it and my sister got a blood clot in her lungs from it. So I took antibiotics instead. It probably was the lessor of two evils. I pass lots of blood clots when I flare. My dad got sinus infections, and he also had acne when he was young. I have narrow ear canals that point downward. I used to get ear infections all the time due to wax buildup.

I'm the one and only. I'd much rather have the distinction of being the first to get a doctorate or win a major lottery. Yeah, that would have been sweeter. :(

I have a cousin with Crohn's, but she's adopted, so nobody that I'm genetically related to.

No others I know of except I strongly suspect my mom had UC. She was a smoker her whole life (except when she got "that" cough and eventually died of lung cancer). All that blood and urgency and "smell" wasn't just piles!!!

My dad had and my sister has ankylosing spondylitis...a link to UC...so I suspect I came by it from both sides.

My dad had Juvenile Diabetes, an autoimmune disease. Do you think there could be a relationship between that and my UC?

My son - UC, my niece - Chrons, my brother - IBS, Cousin - Celiac.  It is definitely in our family.  We have a European descent - Russia...

Yes as I said before, the HLA-B27 gene runs on my Dad's side...Exactly. You can get a blood test too for it. I am w/ Quincy on that.

Also, have European Ancestry - German, Polish, Russian, Jewish...

Yes,

I have a sister with Crohn's, a grandfather with diverticulitis and a great grandmother on the other side of my family that had "colitis".  I also suspect my mother had some form of IBD or IBS but she smoked.

wow, I'm surprised at how many people have a relative with some form of bowel problems. My sis and I both got hit around our late 20's. I remember how bad she had hers and I was saying to myself I'm so glad I don't have that so you can imagine how freaked out I was when I found out I did. I remember it completely...went out for some wings and beer the night before, had a couple shots of vodka and went to bed..the BM the next morning was bloody. There were no signs leading up to it at all...one day fine, one day not. My first doc said I had Crohn's and told me to start smoking. I'm so glad I went for a second opinion.
