Hi

I have received a letter off my IBD nurse specialist that reads:

Following your recent clinic review I note that all blood results have come back within normal limits. Apart from a raised white cell count of 13.7 - raised neutrophil count of 12.4 and low lymphocyte count of 0.8

Does anyone have any idea what any of the blood counts mean? Do I need to do anything?

Called them but the phone keeps going straight to answer phone.

I have no idea, but when you find out, can you report back? I have similar questions about my latest blood results... Except I have LOW neutrophil and slightly low white cell count. I'm seeing my doctor next week.

A raised white blood cell count indicates inflamation or infection...not sure about the others...

Normal WBC is 4.3 to and 10.8.

neutrophil Normal range: 1.5 to 8.0 (1,500 to 8,000/mm3)

And this is what it said for the other????

Lymphocytes %
Ref. Range between 15% and 40% of the WBC

Include T-cells, B-cells, and natural killer (NK) cells.

Viral infections may increase their number.
Lymphocyte Count (Absolute)
Ref. Range 1000 - 3500

Multiply the Lymphocytes% above by the total number WBC

What medications are you on? Prednisone can cause a high WBC or an infection. Mine was up to 18.

That doesn't sound like all blood results have come back within normal limits.

Disneynut66 - I am on Mercaptupurine and have just finished Prednisone.

Subdued - That is exactly what I thought. They have not worded it very well at all!

Hi

I'm on Mercaptopurine and Infliximab (Remicade) and my GP rang the other day to say my lymphocyte count wasn't within the normal range. I saw my consultant on Friday and he's decided to drop my dose of mercaptopurine down to 50mg. I agree with other people, it doesn't sound like results were normal, when they're normal they don't usually contact you!

They're all white blood cell types. Basically, there's some type of immune response going on. Could me a flare, infection...could even be what's causing your hives.

My PCP said it takes a while for WBC to return to normal after tapering from Prednisone.
