OT.....Perplexed as to what to do

     My granddaughter is in a school play Friday night.  She's in middle school and only has about a two paragraph role  in the entire play.  We attended last year.  The play was over two hours long with an intermission.  The seats were the uncomfortable folding ones.  There were a million (a tad exagerated) kids there, some sick, coughing and blowing their noses, and everyone was packed in like sardines.  However, last year I was in a full remission, off prednisone and not yet on the big guns.  So far, my daughter hasn't even asked us if we wanted to go.   I believe there is a $10 admittance fee, which doesn't bother me, but this year I am still not completely out of this flare, on prednisone and Humira and I sure don't want to be around any sick kids!  Is there a nice way to back out if my daughter or granddaughter calls asking if we will attend without sounding like the inconsiderate granny?  Hubby doesn't even WANT to go...the play is The Princess and the Pea..lol.

If your daughter hasn't even asked, I would be tempted to just sort of let it go. But, if asked, I would explain that health-wise I'm trying to stay out of crowds right now and ask if you could see a video after. I don't know about there, but it seems every play my kid or my niece and nephew has been in has been video recorded.... so we've been able to see a lot of shows we've missed.
If they don't record it, you could just ask to be shown photos of your grand daughter in costume...

I agree that you should just explain your situation to your daughter and I'm sure she would understand. If you made every effort in the past to be there then you should have a good "track" record. My MIL has made every effort to be there for her grandkids and sometimes she just can't make it. My kids understand - they may be a bit disappointed but they get over it especially if their Gma is sick.

     Ok...thanks...yes they do sell videos because last year my daughter, even though we all attended, bought the video.   Another thing too.....the restrooms are WAY down the hallway and you have to get a key from someone to go  because they keep them locked for some reason..UGH..that is all I would need is to have an accidenteyes .

Yes, I was going to suggest getting a video of the performance too. Maybe you could make it a fun event by having your granddaugther over to watch with you, make some snack foods she loves, and enjoy the show in the comfort of your own home (and chair!) smile

Yes I think it's fine not to go but like others suggested somehow congratulate and acknowledge her performance aside from attending it.

I definitely like the idea of watching the video at home.

Your daughter should understand, and even if she doesn't....you have the control of your own decisions.

Your granddaughter should be told you're sick and cannot go (if the invitation is extended).

I also like the idea of the video at home-and I don't think it is at all unreasonable to skip if the offer is extended. You have more than valid reason.

Maybe you could send her flowers with her mom or something for after the performance? I know I always thought it was so cool when I got flowers after performances when I was that age.

     Yes, we gave her flowers last year after her performance.  All wonderful suggestions, thank you all!!  Think I will invite her over, watch the video and give her flowers, even if I don't get an invitation to attend.  Could be it was soooo overcrowded last year that they limited the amount of people this year.  If there was a fire I doubt we would all make it out of there last year.
