Well i got to mt. sinai hospital at 7:00 am for a 9:00 am surgery. I was vey neverous. I knew there was no turning back when I had that fancy hospital gown on and hat. Although I wasn't goin to turn around anyway. The surgery lasted for 6 hours and when I woke up I was a little nauseated at first, but that past. I just saw in the recovery room saying to myself that it is all over with. I get to a room go to sleep on some pain meds and then when I woke up i was in hell. My entire abdomen area was so sore frm the surgery I was practically in tears. I also wasn't able to eat anything since my small intesting hasn't woken up yet. Eithe way, they gave me some more intense pain killers and I am walking around now and I am hoping to be leaving by monday the doctor said. I will stay in touch with you all and I have to say thank you again The surgeon sad to me: "That was some diseased colon you had". Glad it is over with.

We've been waiting to see how it went. So far so good. Sorry for the pain, it's kind of expected right after surgery. Think of all the pain-free life ahead though.
Please document any experiences you have from here on out. It's really helpful for others who are considering surgery!

i just got back from a walk around the gi section of the hosptial and they said that I am healing well already. My small intestine semed to have awoken, and you know what, I really dont mind this bag thing too much. I am just completelty taken back that I had not had to ghet to up to go to take a poop in 4 days albeit, it was in a bag, but I am not used to it. I am already finding all of my entergy coming back and I am completely pysched. It is going to be weired transitioning over to the ostomies site now. You guys have been a family and I appreciate all that you have done.

Nice to hear from you Anthony.
I had epi-dural anethesia and I had no pain at all in the first 24 hours after the surgery. I started to feel the pain when the epi-dural med was tapered off on the third day. Then I had to take painkillers like oxycodon (spelling?) and Tylenol 3 at least 4 times a day. The pain was so bad that I had difficulty getting up from my bed. My abdomen hurt when I walked. I walked really slowly and I bent my body forward like a hunch-back. I improved a lot after going home.
I had my surgery exactly 4 weeks ago and I'm feeling great. Be patient with yourself and I'm sure you will feel better soon.

Good luck & take care. The hospital should not release you 'til your fluid processing steadies. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

hey guys just checking in again. Someone above did mention that log everything that I did and what happened for those thinking of it. I most certainly will. Right now I have been getting used to this temporary ostomie which almost exploded on me last night. I didn"t realize how fast it was filling up and was like I can wait till morning. Trust me, there was no morning to wait for. the ostomy nurse is showing up tomorrow and will show me some of the newer applicances and will help me select which one is best for me and then will teach me how to use it. The nurses and surgeons here are very surprised to here that I have been emptying my own ostomie. They said the assistants should be doing it. I just told him I am going to be with this so better I learn now and upfront with it. It really isn't all that bad once you get over the whole thing. I am looking forward to this entire process and I am looking forward more to leading a normal life. I finally had a cup of coffee which I have never even thought of drinking for two years. With UC it would come out of me before it even touched my lips. The pain is still around and at some times a little unbearable, but they have the pain killers and it maintains it. I hope that I get discharged tomorrow. BTW, it is great not having to sit on a toilet anymore ;) I will talk with all of you tomorrow. Stay well and enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Hey Anthony,
Its great not being on the toilet for half the day, isn't it? I found the ostomy SUCH a relief and once you figure out how to change it - and then practice a few times, its no big deal. However, I too found I had to empty every night - sometimes 2-3x night. I woke up with a massive baloon on my tummy! You sounbd as is you are doing great. I foudn the pain to last for quite a few weeks - but still so worth it.
Take care and look forward to the start of your new life :)
