After 8 year remission - a flare

Very annoyed at the moment - after an 8 year remission, UC decided to wreak havoc on my life again!!  Called dr. and can't get appt for three weeks, but prescribed Lialda and Rowasa (hate this stuff - even though its an enema, caused severe nausea in the past).  This is just a mild flare at the moment, so hope to get under control fast.

UC is soo sneaky...you would think after eight years you could consider yourself in remission forever...I was almost six years and I started to flare....and it was horrible..now I am on remicade and doing great...good luck on getting it under control.

Hopefully you can get this flare under control before it gets any worse. I've had a 5 year remission then a very short flare up, hopefully yours will be something similar.

Wow, 8 years. I'd probably forget I ever had UC by that time so flaring again would be very annoying indeed.

I feel for you i was in remission for over 22 years and had forgotten that i had it lol

I'm just coming out of a 5 month flare hopefully i will get another 22 years clear

Thanks for all the comments - I was in shock when I went to pick up the lialda last night - after my insurance, I still had to pay $321 for 60 pills (1 month supply). I decided not to take the Rowasa since I know it makes me sick and this flare is not bad enough to need it I don't think. Plus, when I asked about the price it was approximately $700 for a month's supply - insurance might have picked up $100 of that, but I decided not to fill it right now. When I took Rowasa years ago, it was about $300 for a month's supply - outrageous price increase!
Can't afford to be sick these days!

Wow my Rowasa didn't cost $700. I haven't hit my deductible this year so I pay 100% until then. Maybe I have the generic mesalamine, I didn't look. I'm sure it was in the $300 range.
I have it as back-up but have stopped bleeding (permanently I hope).

tego, I am taking Lialda and the samples I got from my doctor come with a prescription card so that with insurance the payment is only $10. a month. See if your GI has any samples with the card. My doc gave me around 8 boxes and each one had a card. I only needed one card and it last for the whole year of 2010. Also. I use the generic mesalamine enemas and they are also cheaper.

Hi

Curious. After such a long remission maybe there it was a cumulative result? Are you sure you cannot trace the flare-up to say one glass of alcohol (per month) or once chocolate bar or even dairy? Because it can be a cumulative effect maybe you just haven't noticed something you've been eating? Maybe even a stressful event?

My best guess for this flare is possibly pre-menopause and the hormone changes that come with it - especially since both of my major flares were pregnancy related. Who knows - but this is just a minor flare at the moment, thank goodness

Sucks that you flare. However I would love to have an 8 year break !! .... or 22 years.
So I wanna say I feel for you, but for me it was a positive post to read, namely that you guys have had such long remissions !! Gives hope. Thanks for that, with respect for the original reason for the thread being posted !!! Hope you go back to you remission ASAP !!

PS the longest remission I've had is 2½ years med-free. Now I have very very mild but often flares. Still so annoying !
