Hi All,   I need your help. I've had Ulcerative Colitis for two years now. I am doing a research paper on UC for school. I have to research the  past, present, and future on the disease. I am having a problem finding past info as far as the doctors who diagnosed the condition, the doctors who developed meds (ie. mesalamine , sulfasalizine, etc.) and methods of treatment before our great new meds, and how they diagnosed it before modern technology. Any other ideas and angles would be helpful too!   Also, if anyone has any feedback as far as where UC is heading, maybe new meds, new options for severe cases, maybe a way to save a diseased colon, or a way to prevent it or cure it? I read some articles saying they found 3 genes unique to UC patients, maybe there is hope for the future in curing!   All replies are greatly appreciated. I don’t understand why I am not finding any relative information on past information, very disappointing. Obviously there is tons of info on the disease itself, but I need specific info and I am not having any luck! Thanks! Kathryn

When I was diagnosed some 24 years ago, the ccfa only had 3 books out... actually, they had 2, and then early in my diagnosis the third came out. I remember the forward of "People... not Patients"... was by a doctor, Howard Spiro, who was a top guy in IBD at Yale, so you might look him up.....he was saying treatment hadn't changed much in 50 years, at that point. Things really have changed since he wrote that!
Also, check out Medscape for a source of reliable, well-vetted articles....
How about some of the recent webcasts from the ccfa about recent research - maybe there would be sources listed somewhere that could help you....? (I thought I'd heard about "20 or more" genetic markers somewhere......)

And the newsletter of the American College of Gastroenterologists always has good articles; I don't know if they archive them.

When's your paper due? In the next few days I might be able to look through some articles I've bookmarked.

Someone had done a thread here about UC in biblical times; maybe a site search...?

Songlady, My rough draft is due Tuesday. I can always add info to my final (think its due the 25th?) if you find some info after Tuesday. I really appreciate your help! Theraputic Advances in Gastroenterology is a new journal - and access is free till Dec-10, you do have to register,

not much history but might be of use.

Sulfasalazine was being tested(I believe in Sweden?) for rheumatoid arthritis when it was noticed that ulcerative colitis patients were benefiting from it. Just from memory, I will let you do your own research smilewinkgrin

The patenting of mesalimine(which is one of the chemicals sulfasalazine breaks down into) delivery systems is a interesting angle for raging against drug companies...and high prices.

What kind of research article are you writing? Hardcore research or popular science article? I could help you with hardcore research article. I am a disaster with popular science writing.

BTW, to disappoint you, the genes found so far have super wide roles to play. If you mess up with either of those ones, you are opening a giant pandora's box. Definitely, they are not being considered as UC therapeutic targets.

hi mindstyle... I am just writing a research paper that focuses on UC, and the past, present, and future of it. I need some sort of angle to research, since it can’t be just the condition itself. I was thinking of taking medication and treatment as the approach. I am going to start the rough draft; the final is due next week. If you have any suggestions, let me know. I appreciate it. Bummer about the genes too. I will omit that in my paper. Thanks
