Just wanted to give an updated about my battle with tummy noises. I've tried all types of supplements and probiotics but nothing really seemed to help. So wanted to say thanks to those who offered advice - especially Quincy who recommended digestive enzymes and provided a very useful website regarding that.

What specifically helped me is Ultra-Zyme by Nature's Plus. I take it as a supplement, 2 capsules daily. It has helped tremendously with my LOUD tummy noises... it's almost completely silenced!

I wanted to share my experience with this so that it may help stop those annoying, embarrassing noises that others suffer with! : )

That's great to hear! Thanks for sharing your remedy; I think I'll give those a whirl too. Hate the tummy noises!

Bunny,

I've been having the same problem with with the noisy gassy stomach.  Where did you get the  Ultra-Zyme by Nature's Plus?  If I can find it here in Durango I'll give it a try.

Hi Bunny...great to hear your tummy noises have improved. How did you decide on the Ultra-Zyme specifically?

When do you take them...after or before a meal or whenever?

Durango Kid: I bought them at a health food store out here in Albuquerque called Sunflower Market. It was about $16.... very worth it! It actually controls gas, noises, and bloating. Hope you can find it!

Quincy: I've been taking it during lunch. I'm assuming since it's a supplement (as opposed to Beano where you have to take it before your first bite) it doesn't matter what time of the day I take it. It just so happens that it's more convenient to take during my lunch break at work. I read on another thread that somebody was successful with that type of brand. As I was shopping around, my eye caught it, I recognized it and decided to give it a try!

I tried a diff. digestive enzyme, Elite Zyme Pro by Thropps Nutrition, tried it and stopped after 2-3 days. Upset my stomach. So now it is in the "cabinet of failed supplements".

I did not have gas or noises. I was taking it to eliminate D and other irregularities.
After stopping the digestive enzyme I started VSL#3 and that seems to do the trick. That plus diet mod.
I bought some Milk Thistle but now don't want to chance trying it.

I found the Ultra Zyme and took two tabs with dinner at about 6:00pm. I just got off the toilet(it's 8:40pm here) after a major blow out for about a half an hour. Best cleaning out I've had in a long time. At least my tummy isn't grumbling any more! I think I'd better stay away from this stuff for a while anyway.

the enzymes didn't cause you to have a blowout in 2 1/2 hours.....

Are you sure Quincy?  This seems like it would be a huge coincidence.  I guess it could have been from dinner, but I didn't eat anything out of the ordinary.  I had a fairly solid movement this morning also.

I'm pretty sure....things don't pass through that quickly.

I would also suggest you not take 2....but one during one meal a day for a few days...then increase eventually.

Q-Hydrocortisone nightly. Doesn't seem to be helping much. Just keeps things at bay. I talked to my GI a little over a week ago about trying 5ASA enemas and he didn't think they would help much. He was also concerned about using them as I'm already on 4800mg Asacol. I just took a job that I'm starting tonight with great health insurance. It kicks in after 90 days assuming I can make it 90 days in this flare. This will help open up more medication avenues. Azathioprine was working for me, but I had to discontinue due to elevated liver enzymes. Once the Aza was discontinued this flare has been slowly getting worse. Pretty frustrating! I'm also thinking of switching my maintainence med to sulpha. What do you think? I always value your input.

Hi...I'm thinking that you don't need to be on 4800 mg of Lialda...but the switch to sulfasalazine is a good option...

Regarding the 5ASA enemas...request them. The doc thinking they won't help is crappola...you have to try them. Tell him you want to give them a fair shot...all you can do is try since your now options are limited.

My take on it anyway...it's unfortunate your treatment has been a bit arse-backwards.


How much fish oil are you on?

Thanks Quincy- I'm taking 1200mg fish oil twice daily.

So I will ask for a prescription for 5ASA enemas, I think they have a generic here in the U.S. I guess I should see what the GIs take is on lowering the Asacol dosage or switching to sulphasalazine. He seemed to think sulpha would nauseate me. Would I continue with the hydrocortisone, maybe do one during the day and a mesalamine enema at bedtime eventually tapering the hydrocortisone?

You have proctosigmoiditis...I personally don't think you need 4800mg oral 5ASA. That's a treatment dosage....don't know how the doc will have it all change over to sulfalasalazine.

Yes, I understand nausea is a side effect....

The rectal meds are MORE IMPORTANT....considering that's where it all starts and where your flares will be starting and having instant access to the area.

If you're on the nightly steroid enema, you could do it the way you suggested....or do alternating nights for a week and then go every third night for the steroid for another week and then every night.

Hope it works out for you.

Hi there! Just wanted to chime in regarding my weekend with taking those enzymes. I became very confident with the enzymes taking effect immediately so I decided to eat my favorite meals that I had to stay away from for a while... Mexican food, macaroni & cheese, burger, fries, and a couple of beers. Nothing too devastating but some of the noises came back but not as intense as before. My conclusion: everything in moderation.

DurangoKid: Have you given those enzymes another shot? Hope they will do you more good than harm this time! : )

Nope, not just yet.  I'm taking Quincy's advice and hopefully my Gi will precscribe me the 5ASA enemas.  Glad the enzymes worked for you though....

I have those same noises! My DR thinks I have IBS on top of IBD, but I'd like to try these enzymes first, before seeking IBS treatments/remedies.
