Doctor wants to put me on imuran.

 Can anybody offer me advice.

 i'm a little bit nervous about taking such a drug any responses would help me alot thanks.

HI.. If you search on here you will find lots of info. I am on it and have been for around 18 months, It didnt keep me in remission but I think it is helping. No side affects either. It seems to work for lots of people, and I hope it works for you too!! - Good luck!

I got very sick from Imuran and ended up in the hospital. However, I think it was because the doctor put me on too high a dosage right away (200 mg.). I am now on 6MP (a cousin to Imuran) and am doing fine--the doctor is now VERY cautious and am at a much lower dosage--75 mg (dosages for Imuran and 6MP are different so 200 mg. doesn't equal 200 mg. 6MP). So, my advice is to start out at a low dosage and go from there. You might want to have some anti-nausea medication on hand, too. I am optimistic that 6MP is going to work.

I don't know if 6MP is working yet, but I really don't have many side effects except I am tired and I cannot drink alcohol--it makes me feel terrible the next day even if I only have 1 drink.

I will be starting it in September and have researched it quite a bit. My doctor is very up to date with UC treatments too. He says it is safer to take Imuran than to go on and off pred. I am looking forward to trying it! Hope it works for you!

I started it in February, no noticeable side effects. My bloodwork has been clean and everything too.

I've been on it for 5 years and actually started off at 250mg, but eventually was lowered to 100mg, which is my current doseage. It was able to keep me in remission for 3 years, but now I get Remicade as well. I've never had a single side effect.

I was taking Imuran. A friend with UC told me that it is a very strong medicine with lots of long term side effects, and it's generally used for cancer patients. That scared the D out of me. I was travelling in India a couple of years back when I came down with flu. The doctor there told me to stay off of it while recovering from flu. I never started it again.

It's actually generally used for recent patients of a kidney transplant and attempts to stop their body from rejecting the new kidney,or arthritis patients. I have had the flu while on Imuran and Remicade, and I recovered in the same amount of time as I did off the meds. The medicine is keeping me in remission, and I'm thankful. Talk about it with your doctor and try to take info that is relayed to you by friends or online message boards for what they are worth.

I don't want to bore the people that read these posts but my UC was way out of control.  It traveled from the rectum and sigmoid to involve my whole colon.  I had a lot of diarrhea and lost a lot of blood along the last twenty years.  There were points that I was afraid to leave my house due to the fear of having an accident. 

Asacol and prednisone usage didn't do anything for my UC.  I was put on Imuran around one year ago and it has put me in remission.  My last colonoscopy showed an almost perfect colon.  I have had no side effects and in fact feel better now becaues I am not anemic.  I am not worride about potential problems because I know for a fact all that inflammation was not doing me any good.  I trust my GI doc, he works out of Harvard's teaching hospital and only treats UC and Chrons.  He trust this drug with its past safety record.  This med has given me my life back.  I have never had a problem with my blood work, liver tests or lower wbc, etc..

I would take it without worries.
