6MP and Allopurinol?

Have you used 6MP and Allopurinol together when your liver function tests were too high?

 

Any info would be great- Thanks

My daughter used both. about a month after she started taking 6MP her liver function result was high, so her doctor lowered her dose of 6mp and added allopurinol. The Allopurinol slows the absorption of 6mp. Didn't produce good results for her--the 6mp was unable to get her into remission, so the next step for her was remicade. Within hours after her first infusion, she was in remission! Last only about 6 weeks, however; she started flaring soon after her third infusion and has been flaring ever since (almost 2 years now). Scheduled for surgery next month.

Hope you can find the magic combo which works for your daughter!

wow- so sorry about your daughter...has her flare been bad for these 2 years? What have you been doing as far as treatments for these 2 years?
Did she ever try Humira? Is she 14 now? How long did you try the 6-MP/Allopurinol combo?

She will be 15 next month.  I will have to update my signature.....medications, supplements have changed so often I haven't been able to keep it updated!

She was on the allopurinol/6mp for about 4 months.  We never did try Humira, after trying 3 'scary' medications (tacrolimus, 6mp, remicade) my husband and I decided not to try any more of those type of medications because when they do not work, the worry of the side effects is almost unbearable for us.

Yes, her flare has been ongoing since August, 2008.  It has been a long, slow, downward spiral, she has had to give up all the sports and activities she was once so active in.  She is unable to go to school and has been completing this schoolyear at home.  The only bright spot has been her incredible disposition.......despite all that she has been through she has maintained her lovely, sunny, positive outlook.  Her determination to weather through is so inspiring.  She brings me such joy, what she is going through is truly heartbreaking.

Is your daughter flaring badly?  Has she had any remission at all since her diagnosis?

She is actually doing fairly well right now but her ALT is high and her 6-MP tests are not what they should be for success.
Waiting for some more test results and then we will have some more info.
I know you know exactly what we are going through.
I am sure it was a hard descision to finally go for the surgery but I am sure you want your daughter to have a life too.
I am so sorry for all parents that have to deal with this with their children. It is so miserable and stressful.

Your daughter must be incredible to keep up her spirits while being home everyday and miserable on top of that.

I feel really unsure about the 6-MP/Allopurinol option as I can't really find alot of info about it and it doesn't appear to be
used by too many people.

I went back and checked through my records, my daughter's ALT was high (143-162) for 3 months that she was on allopurinol......when the ALT started coming down, she started flaring. I wish I had taken better, more detailed notes as to the reasons for the allopurinol. The doctor gave me the impression that this was not unheard of and allopurinol would bring the levels into a normal range. She was in remission at the time and it didn't seem to be harming anything so I think I wasn't paying attention as I should have! She was also taking tacrolimus at the time, and I recall that was also part of the equation with the 6mp and allopurinal regarding the high liver function test result.
